Anyone going crazy waiting for Gen 4?

I don't have a vehicle right now (not for the last 2 years), so beside not having a vehicle to go places, waiting for more Tacoma news and videos is killing me! I just want to see the new Tacoma in action. I know we are months away so it's very frustrating!

I'm just curious if I'm the only one on here who feels this way? I know many who never owned a Tacoma already bought the 2023 model. If I could factory order a 2023 Tacoma with the trim, color and spec I want, I would already have a Tacoma in my driveway already. But needing a manual has made everything a pain.

I find myself religiously checking Toyota YT every day for news and videos of the new Tacoma. This addiction is probably not healthy.

Definitely not.
Being a first time Toyota owner (swapping from a JKRU, to a 2020 DCLB and 9 or so Jeeps prior to that) the one thing I've learned is never EVER buy the first year of a newly designed or re-designed vehicle.

Never mind the manufacturer, or model it's just a major rule of thumb for me after owning a lot of vehicles over the years.

I'll see what the gen-4 Taco has in 10 years or so when I think about a replacement.

 

This is because you already have a Taco. As someone who never owned a Tacoma or any truck, I never had that experience.

I had the chance to buy in 2016 until I got laid off. And while I did not realize at that time, the 2016 was also a first-year model. It seems like history is repeating itself with a different outcome this time around.

 

Honestly no, it's not. It's because of my horrible experiences buying new vehicles, or vehicles that were newly redesigned. The Tacoma I actually bought sight unseen (IRL, have a ton of pics of it) from a dealership in TX and had it shipped up to us here in Omaha.
I bought my first Toyota sight unseen with 8,000 miles on it, based souly on the exact truck/options/color I wanted, the Tacoma's long standing reliability and the 5 years or so they had to work a lot of the bugs out of the 3rd gen, and SO glad I did.

This is a great rule of thumb for absolutely any new models of any vehicle, that have brand new untested in the real world, power train, steering, seats, ect ect.

I'm not saying you will definitely have issues. I'm simply saying it's a lot more likely when you spend that much money on a highly complex vehicle that has a multitude of unproven design aspects.

It's just a LOT of money to spend on that chance.

Honestly I do plan on getting a gen-4 some day, it will just be 5 or 10 years down the road.

 

I'm leaning toward the 2023 as well...it's kind of a love/hate relationship with the Gen 3 Tacoma. I still feel very salty that I didn't get it back in 2016 or even 2019, and it's like a slap in the face to get it now at the end of its lifecycle. That 9 years of off-roading I missed out on---and my 20's.

Whereas the Gen 4 is a fresh start. No painful memory reminder of constantly visiting various Tacoma forums, looking up mod pictures, and wishing I owned one. Gen 3 no longer has that fresh paint smell/look as it used to. It's not outdated by any mean, just not as fresh.

If I could get it in Electric Lime, it would feel fresh again, considering bright green is my favorite color for vehicles.

I contacted so many dealers and none of them have Electric Lime in manual.

 

Nah...just enjoying my 3rd gen....I can wait still have a few more dollars to sock away...planning on another cash only purchase...save your thoughts people...my mula my choice..Really wanted to like the New Tundra..but thats off topic...

 

Looking forward to it and glad there’s finally something Tacoma related to discuss. But I’m definitely in the 2025/early 2026 class of buyers. The real obsessing comes once you place a deposit.

 

As to experience, I absolutely LOVE my 3rd gen!!!

I've got 17,000+ miles on Sandy now, all across the country towing our trailer too, and she's been on point the whole time.
Never going back I don't believe, but once I do decide to go for another vehicle it will likely be a Tacoma

 

Quicksand is the only non-flashy/bright color that I like on the Gen 3 Tacoma. I'm not even a fan of Army Green either.

While both are military color, I have always preferred desert over woodland. Great choice! Such a unique and interesting color!

 

I looked for my 3rd gen for awhile before finding mine. It was tough to find what I wanted throughout mid 2022, and it was frustrating to constantly see trucks disappear, dealers do the markup nonsense after quoting msrp and I think the worst was the salesman who just kept coming back over and over asking me what I wanted and then telling that it would be impossible to find.

I feel sorry for those early adopters who just have to be first to have the newest model. Between trying to get one and the high chance of first model year blues, honestly I’m very happy I found mine when I did.

Im solidly good for a few years - I'll drrol when theres a similar size full electric offroader.

So I'm without a vehicle for 2-3 weeks. Be happy you have something to get around in.

If Gen 4 was available I'd probably go with that but both will be good. I took a chance with a used 2021 Tundra from Carmax but had too many issues where it had been wrecked and cats stolen, so retuned it. Still got 3k more for my trade in, and ordered the Gen 3 Taco.

I'd probably hold off on the first year new model but most people will need a new vehicle and get what's available and be fine with it. They might get a phone holder or windshild shade, but only plan to keep the vehile a while, and needs to be relaible so they can get on with their life.

 

i did for a couple of days while we waited for the big reveal. Now i don't really care. Think i'll keep my cheap little pos truck and buy a mustang for summer fun.

Given Toyota's known configurations for 2024 I am less enthused than before they announced the models.
The loss of a true access cab (with doors) seems a poor choice. If it was a future crash issue, they are already removing the seats -- "no occupants, no injuries, no test dummies". They can leave the doors in place? Additionally, that new (and improved!) "Xtra cab" model is not even available in the Sport or OR models. If you drop back to the SR to get the Xtra cab and 4X4 then you cannot get the iForce hybrid or coil rear end suspension.

I have what I need in my current 2021 AC OR. Toyota is not providing a path to upgrade with what I want to replace and what I currently possess.
In short. No. Not excited. Although I will be interested when it finally hits the streets and performance, MPG, and driving experiences are reviewed.

 

I used to think the "don't buy the first year of a vehicle" thing was BS but I do think there is some truth to it. The new Tundra had the wastegate issue as well as some other teething issues that have hurt their overall reliability scores. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 years for manufacturers to address problems that don't creep up until higher mileage. I think Toyota will get the Tundra sorted out. They have no choice. It's gonna be the engine in their Tundra for the next decade or so probably.

I do think that the Tacoma 2.4 will be a reliable engine but may have some early issues as well.

 

if i needed a mid-size truck, planned to keep it 5-10 years, and narrowed it down to a tacoma, without hesitation i would locate and buy a 2023 (or slightly used and certified 2022) even if it were not the color and had all the options i wanted.

the 2024 will be a shit show, at least for the first year or two.

 

If it had a 3.OT like the ranger raptor producing 400+hp, i would empty the savings acct.
