So I've got the crazy idea to install a true air horn which means compressor and a tank...I've found the AOB mega thread but it seems like a lot of the installs were done to 2nd Gens. Compared to the 2nd Gens, how different are our trucks when it comes to install points and dimensions? I'm debating putting the tank in place of the spare tire or in the bed of my truck underneath the can for my rollup tonneau and putting the compressor under the hood near the rear of the engine bay on the passenger side.

Not quite sure where to put the actual horn though lol

If your creative 3rd gens have alot of space behind the grill. Also most mounting points I've seen are different between 2 and 3rd gen when it comes to mounting to the body.

Are you not going to carry a spare for this tank??

Yeah, I was thinking about putting the horn behind the grill but it wouldn't be forward facing at that point. As far as the spare, I've already borked myself by changing out the factory tire size so theoretically, if I did have a flat, I'm not sure what risks I'd run having three wheels in one size and the fourth a different, smaller size.

I'm currently in the planning stage so I'm trying to get insight from anyone else who might have done something similar to see if it's even something reasonably easy to do or it's going to be extremely complicated. :notsure:

What is the operating pressure and air flow required for the horn you want to use? Some horns also come with their own compressors as well.

If you do get one, better learn to duck fast when you use your horn! People will get really pissed with those…. Don’t ask how I know! :anonymous: …I was a young punk back then.

I've driven a few hundred miles home mixing three 35" tires and a 32" spare with no issues aside from holding the steering wheel at 11 o'clock. ABS, VSC, even adaptive cruise worked fine.

Most frame mounting points are common between 2nd and 3rd gens. Not sure where you'll be able to mount an air tank without killing ground clearance though.

its the same in the rear of the truck. I have a tank at the end of my bed. used metal plates top and bottom of the bed to sandwhich it. Its gone through paces without issues. My buddy with this 3rd gen has it mounted in the same place. Neither of us have spare tires there anymore but you could prob get away with a small narrow tank

no issues with ground clearance with a 4gallon tank. A thinner one would be better but it sits about the same as my archive cross brace. I can snap a photo but generally cant see it unless you look under the truck.

^I was going by the premise of keeping the spare at the stock location. If the spare is moved then yeah lots of space. Hell make your own air tank out of schedule 40 pipe and it'll take a hit like any skid plate or slider.

If it's not too much trouble to ask, could you snap off a pic so I could visualize how it's mounted?

I'm actually looking at a 2 gallon tank with fairly small dimensions; 8 inches tall and about 17 inches long.
