Looking at Wilco (thanks BTW) and I don't understand...they say "...spare tire directly to the cab mounted bedrail on your Toyota Tacoma"
and again they say "Factory cab mounted bed rail is required and is not Included."

I don't know what "cab mounted bed rail" is? I'm including a pic of my bed so, are they insisting upon another of the rails I have installed along the sides? Do I need one of those at the cab end?

Also, is camper shell an issue?:goingcrazy:

Do I need what I see online as "header deck rail?" see below?

Yup, the earlier model years had these rails.

I run Rigd. I also use the anytime back up camera and just plug/unplug the connector when needed and not. I like the versatility of having it when needed and not needed, plus with a 5ft bed I need all the room for coolers and camping crap lol

This certainly isn’t perfect, but a good temp solution I’ve used while laying the tire down flat.

    Sorry, mine are 33’s.

Well, this is what I’ve done with my spare. Used a ratchet strap to secure it on the cab side. Cable lock to keep a$$holes from possibly stealing. ‍♀️

Kinda now looking for a cover to put over the spare to keep sun damage to a minimal. Thinking I’ll either have to adjust how I’ve mounted it and/or cut a slit in a cover to feed the strap through….

Well when I tried the tire was touching the exhaust.

When I first raised my truck I was running 285/70/17's and the spare fit nicely under the bed. The exhaust was a bit close but no hammering or anything needed.

I just upgraded to 35's (Nitto Ridge Grappler 35x11.50R17 and it still fits nicely in the stock location. I did bob the exhaust just behind the muffler and added a downturn to it. I also cut off the metal support for the exhaust hanger in the right rear. After that it went right in and I have more ground clearance than I did with the 285/70/17's. It can be done.

Next hurdle: running Archive Hammer Hangers and cross tube that makes that position inaccessible. ;)

As you raise the tire, push it away from the exhaust. Or just do an axle dump and be done with it.

LOL, you're right, that is a different ballgame. It's hard to tell from the pic, would you be able to leave the tire deflated and just inflate it in the event you need it? It looks like that cross brace may block the wheel entirely.

Yeah, it blocks the spot entirely. It’s not necessary to run the cross tube with archives hammer hangers but it does make a big difference in rear wheel bounce.

Really leaning towards a bed rail mounted solution for my 35” spare after reading all the input in here. I had a swing out on order with Outgear Solutions that looked as clean of an option as any, but I really prefer the look of the non-swing out version.

With that said, this causes an issue with my basic platform in the bed of the truck. The platform is similar to Bam Bed’s style with 3 piece design that just utilizes the factory bed liner edges. I will have to cut and box out the area where the tire will be on the passenger side. I liked the simplicity of just the three boards, but I can’t think of a better solution.

Anyone in here running a spare with a platform? Anyone have a better solution that doesn’t involve a swing out or strapping it to the roof rack?

I ended up just slapping a front runner low profile rack inside of my larger RCI bed rack and trimming the center beam on the RCI rack to allow the tire to poke through. I used a strap from dirtking to secure the tire to the front runner

I was just thinking about this today when I came across the Bam Bad style platforms. I like this idea. My thought is to lay the spare down in the bed and figure out a way to raise the platform enough to allow the spare to lay flat, and the platform to cover the spare. In theory, you'd just need taller supports and maybe an appropriate spacer for the parts that rest in the grooves of the bed. I think this is what I will try to make work.
