I suppose, but not always. Medical will make you sign a form and ask for insurance and ID. Then the hospital and city are going to want payment. That might be an issue if one lives off grid with no known address. If it's a rural fire there's a possibility one might get a bill.

if you saw some of the shit people build that we end up coming back later to fix you would probably appreciate the value of permitted , inspected , code-compliant work

Unfortunately all too common, especially with older houses. I'm waiting to see how many I eventually find in mine. House was built in 1965, so it does have a bunch of junction boxes in the basement "ceiling". Although the person who did the partial finish to the basement on one side did not know electrical very well. Above the ceiling tile it's an absolute rats nest. I really need to fix it, but all the wire needs tore out and started from scratch. And we all know how expensive 14/2 and 14/3 is now adays... :annoyed:

Obviously the amount of bureaucracy, and lack of inspectors are big factors.... but do you think if the permitting process was quicker and cheaper, the amount of people avoiding the process would go down?
I just can't help but feel that if someone wants to put in a 2 pcs bathroom, and they're looking at $5k all in and 2 weeks of work without a permit, or 10k all in and 4-6 weeks of work with a permit, it's almost pushing people away from 'Do it right the first time' unfortuneatly.

Anyone doing permitting via video? Seems like that could streamline things. More frequent checkins, greater convenience and potentially lower costs.

I work for a commercial GC and we did a fair amount of video inspections during COVID. It can be difficult with cell reception and video quality depending on location (both of the site and the inspector). Its also much more difficult to look at plans/details together if there is an issue that needs investigation.

I'd say 95%+ of it has gone back to in-person. I think there is an inherent distrust between builder and inspectors, where the inspector assumes that any known issues or issues subject to interpretation would simply be skipped over, or not shown by a builder during a video inspector.

The video inspections/reviews we do are typically with architects and engineers to review field issues so they don't need to make field visits, rather than inspectors.

well it wouldn't be $5K for a bathroom alteration permit , thats 1/2 the cost of a permit for an average new dwelling construction

On today's episode of "Oh, you're selling your house? ...let's see what can break right before listing" we get to cough up for new garage door springs, a garage door brace and a new ceiling fan in the living room. Pictures later today. :annoyed: (At least I can do the fan myself) :spending:

Funny, that one gave out and flooded the garage/adjacent bedroom right after we bought the place. Turned that mess in on the home insurance. Next place will definitely be getting another Rinnai tankless setup. Hopefully a place to park the boat too.
