I realize the benefits of doing it yourself but I always taken it to the dealership. I'm on my third Tacoma and knock on wood I've never had an issue. Cost doesn't bother me since I'm a low mileage guy so we're talking once or twice a year.

Let me add, things get more complicated if you have a skid plate (not the skimpy one that comes on most Tacomas) You either have to remove the skid plate or use the small trap door on the TRD skid plate. Using the trap door is fine except the filer is not directly under the opening, but rather tucked in to the side. If you don't use the drain kit to clear the filter before removing you get a big puddle of oil on the inside of the skid plate which is a bitch to clean. Just something to consider.

I drain my oil into a small bucket that fits right under the truck no ramps. Less mess if you use a regular oil catch pan the truck is so high the stream of oil blows out the sides I’ve done it. The bucket solved that issue.

motivX filter housing drain. drop pan oil, tighten drain plug and install new washer. drop access plug on filter housing with paper towel, or rag in hand to catch small drips. install motivX drain into housing, with tube into drain pan, thread in motivX valve, let drain till it stops, remove motivX drain tool. using motivX filter housing wrench, loosen housing, and remove. drain and dry filter housing. replace o-ring on housing, and lube the o-ring, with fresh oil. install fresh filter in housing, fill housing about halfway full with fresh oil, to saturate new filter, install housing. install new access plug o-ring and lube it with fresh oil, tighten access plug. fill oil, start truck, let run for a few minutes, check for leaks. drip, and mess clean up should be minimal, unless you do it in windy conditions.

just did mine yesterday, no issues at all. Ski

This is what I suggest, drain the oil while it's cold. A car comes into the shop at full operating temp there is bound to be oil splashing on the floor (Subaru is THE worst, they have a huge drain plug and the oil comes out like niagra falls).

When we bought our current house the previous owner left a bed mat behind for a large truck, it’s perfect to set on the driveway, park over it, and use as a catch for any splatter. I also use a wide, tall 10 gallon catch can. Not much gets beyond it.

I have a fumoto style plug on my lawnmower and I don’t like it for a variety of reasons.

I’d agree that it gets easier after each service. I have a huge oil catch and then use shop towels to wipe hands as I go. Then I got this really cool kit that drains the filter before you pull it off. It gets like 90% off and makes the process much cleaner.

use the free ones, it is easier to crawl under the truck for 1 min to ck their work than it is to change it

I actually just changed my oil & filter yesterday, and by the grace of god I managed not to get any oil in my driveway:muscleflexing:

It was actually pretty damn easy- At least compared to my last truck with the canister upside down in the top engine bay, so no matter what you always got engine oil on the hoses and canister area.

Did u let the engine cool off first before draining . Cooler oil flows slower and will be easier to catch . Doing inside a garage prevents the wind from hitting the oil .if not available put some boxes on each side of the truck to prevent crosswinds .

Anything “wrong” with taking off the filter drain plug fit that’s what you’re referring to? Or just personal preference.

I use a Fumoto valve. No way I’m letting anyone but me change my oil or filter. Amsoil/HPL only.

I hate to admit it, but this set up is amazingly high-quality. I thought it was a little excessive when somewhere originally speaking of it. After buying a subpar filter, tool, I bought the Motivx. It is absolutely amazing. Well worth the cost.

I could have done without the funnel, but it is actually a nice piece

For me it was an extra messy step. You push that tool in there and it floods out. Another chance for a leak. More controllable for draining just to loosen the cup. There is nothing “wrong” with doing it. We are talking splashing and what not. The only time I used it was for a stupid ass skid plate. I used a hose on it to avoid the puddle in the skid plate.

When it comes to oil changes, I really miss my 2nd gen. Was so much easier and way less messy…

I'm gonna be the odd one out and say I prefer the oil change process on the 3rd gens compared to the 2nd gens. I've had two of both and while the oil filter on top for the 2nd gens looks nice, that drainage nipple deal could be a pain some times.
