I didn't know such a thing existed until after I joined this forum. My take on it is that it gives you a very modest traction aid that can be used effectively in certain situations without the added cost and weight of a 4wd system. I also think it's a marketing ploy that works in areas where desert racing is popular.

Not sure why they ever dropped the Prerunner, I thought it was cool. And it differentiated from the 4x4 instead of trying to fool people.

Huh? The name "prerunner" on a stock tacoma isn't trying to fool people into thinking it is actually a good choice for prerunning a desert race course? :)

No more than "Off Road" when Toyota will target that usage to deny warranty claims.

You will get no argument from me about slapping an "off road" label on a 2wd pickup. I've owned 3 of them and they are useless in any low traction situation without a lot of skinny pedal.

Toyota could probably amend the model designations to "Somewhat-Sporty", "Off Roadish" and "Prerunner-like".

“Offroad, 2wd” appears to be an oxymoron.

Plenty of "off road" vehicles don't drive all the wheels and haul ass. Check out the Dakar classes.

Maybe I read this thread too quickly and I don't mean to go off topic but I must ask a question. The 4wd OR needs to be in 4WD-LOW, what is the prerequisite for the locker on a 2wd?

My 2¢, I like the simplicity of the 2wd and the availability of extra traction that a locker can give, it may not give the traction of a 4wd but it also doesn't come with the added cost (initial and maintenance) and attention necessary ("use it or loose it" and remembering not to lock her to the left or right in 4wd). I've been stuck in the snow a few times so I now chose to have a 4wd or awd in my stable as long as I have to deal with snow regularly or have a desire to go off roading. If I still lived in Florida, the 2wd OR would be a higher consideration, we'll see what the future holds as I get closer to retirement.

Just struck me as being an oxymoron. Toyota has a sense of humour after all.
