Holding the brake pedal is not necessary, but may take about twice as long before the engine starts to crank. Just FYI.

I had something similar with my trd pro (2018) just recently. Intermittent non start but remote start worked most times.

Ended up being the battery, as it was factory, and funny enough the bad battery tested fine.

Haven't had a problem since swapping it out.

Luckily I have the Batteries Plus warranty on the battery. What made you decide to change if it tested good?

I see. I thought it was referring to something not involving the brake pedal.

It's not necessary, but I think it takes a little bit longer. I've done it before for fun when I was too lazy to talk to the driver's side to start the truck. It would have been faster if I had though, lol.

OP, can you elaborate on what you mean by "won't start"? Do you hear nothing? Clicking? Engine turning over but does not fire? Engine sputters?

Correct, does nothing. All the proper lights on the dash light up but no start.

Ok, if the push button does nothing, but remote start using the key fob works, I think we can rule out the battery, fuel, and spark issues. I would guess push button switch, key fob, or other engine electronic control issue.

Note that the check charging system error is displayed whenever the engine fails to start or stops running when the the ignition is on. In most cases it’s telling you that the voltage is below what it expects if the alternator is turning. It’s typically nothing to worry about. You’d think Toyota could make it a bit smarter.

Well, I got back into town a few hours ago and have tried everything you all have suggested. I'm going to have it towed to the dealership tomorrow and will let you know the outcome.

Why do you need to have it towed? I thought it started with remote start.

Yes but Tacomas shut off when you step on the brake.

Yes it’s very common and normal, yet many new car owners get confused by it.

I was having some similar issue— but with your remote start working it does not sound that similar. Nonetheless.. I cleaned and reseated the pos/neg terminals and she’s been great.

I have removed and replaced the terminals numerous times as weak as replacing the key fob battery.

I’m aware, but new car owners sometimes get freaked out. It’s a misleading error message.
