I've got a 30' one of those and it is plenty long, but gets stuck about 15' in. Thanks for the tip about the towel, will definitely use one.

More electric work today. Been wanting to put a ceiling fan in my room for a while now, but the old electrical box would not support a fan. Welp, braved the heat and got my ass in the attic...

Removed the old box and set it to the side. Being an older house wires were all tied in the ceiling boxes. I did not want to try and remove all them and stuff them in a new box.

Enlarged the opening and installed a new box. This was my method of keeping it flush to the ceiling

Box secured with 2x4 and wire extended. This looks a little goofy, yes. I didn't realize there was a trim ring and didn't buy the larger cover. All I had was the smaller one. I'll eventually get the correct cover.

Done in the attic, secured and got the wires ready.

So, I already had the fan. Had it installed in the kitchen, but I never used it. Just swapped fixtures. Everything put up!

Still need to touch up paint, but that will be another day. Not sure how hot it was in the attic, but I didn't have a dry thread on me. And I don't normally sweat that much!

You could have used one of these and not have to go into the attic.

I had to go in the attic anyways to move the original box anyways. I didn't want to disconnect any of the old wiring and they left me plenty of wire to move it around. I might use of of those to add a fan in the living room though. There's no fixture up there at all so I gotta run a switch and box, so I'll probably go with another metal ceiling box again.

Yea it gets insanely hot in attics. Couldn’t imagine being up there when it’s 90+ outside.

My bathrooms didn’t have any exhaust fans. So a couple of months before it got too hot decided change that. Had to run all the wiring and ducts, and was doing it by myself. So spent some time up there doing it. Was soaked as well. Was like 81° when I installed these. Luckily in the north east we don’t get the temps they do in other parts of the country. Couldn’t imagine living in Arizona or something

Originally bought these touch switches but didn’t like them. Replace them with the humidity sensor switches. Like these a lot better.

Looks nice! Also :101010: for the cover screws!

My living room has no light in the ceiling at all, besides an oddly placed can light all the way at the end. When it cools off I'm gonna add a box up there. Have to run all the wire and such. I will run 14/3 so I can control a fan and light separately if I choose to put a fan up there. Might as well spend a little bit more upfront.

I’m an electrician so that’s one thing I should do right

smart move on the 14/3. Better to have and not need, than need and not have.

Thought that first switch had a dimmable night light output, however it was just a separate output for like a separate night light bulb. Hated how you had to turn the power button on first before it would let you operate the fan or light too.

Actually gotta get back up in my attic sometime. Wanted to add a light or ceiling fan in the baby’s room. Currently she just has a switched receptacle in her room. Was thinking of putting a ceiling fan in there since it’s always pretty hot in her room. Her room has the attic access, and I think I need to better seal/insulate that.

Too many projects, not enough time and money :frusty:

We installed a solar roof mounted attic fan not long after the roof was redone. It makes a noticeable difference in the summer and seems to take a bit of the load off the ac.

Had a buddy who did that in his house. He said it helped alot. He had the same type of build as my last house, Cape cod. After I got up there and did all the insulation properly I wanted to install one. Even ran the wiring for it. Just never got around to getting one. Ended up selling the house. New home has alot better air flow, but still wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’ve been thinking about it. Again, another project on the to do list

That's the way my house was built. To get light they just switched an outlet. I remember them doing this up until the 90's. Drives me insane!

Added a twist timer (1 hour) to my attic fan. I kept leaving the rocker switch on, sometimes all night which is a waste of electricity.

Damm, builders are still doing that? The cost has got to be minimal to put a ceiling box in, especially with everything exposed.

As someone who's lived 27 years in the NE and 22 years in the Cali desert I can safely say I'd take 102 and 5% humidity over 88 and 90% humidity any day. lol

    mostly spec-home builders.

it's roughly $300 with labor to install a ceiling box. for any custom home, that's nothing, but spec homes, that's a significant cost savings.

But you know, they would use 8-10 extra feet of wire, and that save them about $50 a home….
