I’ve been watching a few videos on the procedure and it’s very similar to what I’ve done in the past. I’m also thinking about going with Amsoil for the fluid change or Redline. I know both produce very high quality fluids. Toyota telling customers to only is WS fluid is scare tactics and WS is not the best fluid available. Anyway, have any of you gone this route in your AT transmissions?

I’m well aware the warranty implications.

Trying to start an oil holy war in the 3rd gen chat in 2023 be like:

A search would have found literally thousands of posts on this topic all of them with the same consensus: use whatever you want, it's all good.

EDIT: Also I'm impressed you've put enough miles on a 2023 to care about ATF.

Use it as a data point. I change WS first time in my 2012 Prius at 154k miles . I know, it is CVT tranny, but still impressive performance.

WS on RockAuto is cheap ($8ea). Why not just dump/fill more often?

It's just how this discussion always goes because there's really no objective way to determine "best" in this case and they all work just totally A-OK. Someone always disagrees because in 1973 their momma huffed some Amsoil and it cured cancer but wait in 1984 someone elses momma huffed Amsoil and it broke her leg and Redline cured it right up, so you tell me, which is better?

Not about being cheap, just want something better than the status quo.

Yeah, I get it and nothing wrong with sticking to Toyota fluids, I just like Amsoil and their wear additives are usually superior compared to many other brands. Though I’m currently using Mobile 1’s European Formula as my break-in engine oil. I often browse BTOG forums, lots of UOA’s seem very positive.

And ECGS tell anyone running Nitro 5.29s to run Lucas 85W140 in your diffs or they won't warranty the gears and there's not a gear shop on the planet I trust more than ECGS. ;)

(Just pokin' the bear. If you're running something better than water, you'll be just fine.)

Thanks for the info, I will definitely look them up. I will be doing the gear oil as well pretty early on.

Engine oils & gear oils I have no issue using any quality brand that meets the published specifications.

Automatic transmissions however I prefer to stick with the OEM fluid, modern transmissions have a lot more engineering in them than the TorqueFlite, Power Glide & C4/C6 transmissions of days past.

Of course you do. That makes you an expert tribologist. Something that that takes mere mortals 8 years to accomplish. They should have just went to Bobistheoilguy and saves seven years and 364 days!

yes, if “engineers” recommend going 10K miles before changing the oil on an engine break-in then I definitely know better than they do… lol

Welcome to 2023. Your engine tune does the break-in for you and won't let you do anything dumb enough to regret it.

Yes, they know better than you, I promise. The proof is in the statistics, mind you, same with oil: 150,000 trucks a year and I promise you the number of people who put the same thought into the transmission and engine as you are in the triple digits. But those trucks aren't all fallin' over.

But again: there's nothing wrong with putting more effort in, it's just really not necessary.

I use AMSoil in my Toyota transmissions. Hell, I use it on most everything except my Allison transmission.

No offense, but I'm an engineer myself and I'll trust what is the normal procedure for anyone who builds performance engines and also performance vehicles that don't care about maintenance cost. I've built a few engines over my lifetime, oil is cheap microscopic scoring is not.

Lol you are full of shit, and I say that kindly. Go get your degree, spend 30 years in design and then, come back and say that. I will listen to you then.

Toyota runs every single engine before installation, changes the oil and then installs it in the truck. Read some of the thousand oil samples here and learn some things.

I'm an engineer too: a mechanical one with a PE at that.

I don't think any of us would ever call the 2GR-FKS a performance engine, though. ;) I don't treat my Tacoma like I treat my 911 because they ain't built the same.
