My ex and I had a cat with long term kidney disease (very common in Persians). We had to give him oral meds at least once a week. We would put a bath towel on the bed, lay him down on his back at one end of the towel, one of us held his front legs, and the other basically rolled him up in the towel, front legs inside, of course. We called it a "purrito". Then you can grip the towel just under the cats chin, to keep them from being able to get their front legs (eg: "shredders") out of the towel and turning you into a bleeding mess.

Our Vet told us that if you can do it, out one hand behind the cats head, and with thumb and fore or middle finger, reach around and gently apply a squeezing pressure at the jaws hings point. That makes the cat open their own mouth, and keeps them from being able to close it while you toss that pill down the hatch.

We had to resort to this method, after he learned that there was a pill buried in that Greenies Pill Pocket. He'd eat the pocket, and spit the pill out

He had been a rescue, so we had no real idea how old he was. When he passed from the kidney failure, the Vet hospital that had treated him at one point, did a free autopsy (it was a Veterinary Teaching Hospital, so they would do free autopsies on any animal they had treated, to give Vet students the experience), estimated he was 5 - 7 years old.

I loved that cat. I bonded insanely strongly with him. After he passed, I got a memorial tattoo of his face. That was in 2008. I have since added two more kitty memorial tattoos.

Had, love Himalayans… I get ya. All were scared rescues first. Boo wasn’t seen by anyone other than me for his first few months. Anywho… back to the point… both dogs and cats - pop pill in mouth (aim for back of throat), close mouth quickly and promptly blow on nose. Their reflex is to stop breathing and swallow. Do it a few times if you’re not sure they swallowed. If failure, repeat. They do make pill guns, but they’re really not needed. Head up and stroke throat down will help with stubborn pets.

I forgot about the stroking their throat to induce swallowing. My ex also did that.

If I had a pet I'd just lay their pills on the counter and say, 'your pill is on the counter'.
    Is that wrong? :anonymous:
