In MA it has to be a direct threat and you have no means of escape, IIRC. Also, you can't shoot within 500 feet of a building or roadway. I remember a case (sort of) from central MA a few years ago. Guy claimed that the bear was charging him, but the evidence said otherwise. I don't think he went to prison, but he probably lost his FID/LTC and was fined.

Our property backs onto conservation land and I know that there are foxes, coyotes, and other animals back there. It's large enough that a bear could be in there, but I've never seen any evidence of it.

So both sides are like this. I’m guessing when I got my lift and I got stuck due to the brake lines pinching their fix was to just take off the clip and not extend the lines.

Should I get stainless line extensions there? Edit apparently it’s mechanical and just wet

Do you watch north woods law? I'm always surprised how lenient the penalties are. One guy shot a turkey too close to a library and some bird shot hit the building and I think he just lost his permit for the season
