Yes, probably. Still need to confirm, just bought a dial indicator today for that purpose. Next few days I’m busy with beers & school so won’t know for sure until the weekend.

Either way I have decided to simplify by going less adjustable. SPCs have become a question mark I don’t want or need to deal with.

Man, I wish I could justify a new bike because this would probably be a good fit for my purposes. But... I'll need new tires myself by spring probably, if not sooner. And probably new wheels.

My ~30 year old Giant mtn bike aluminum frame (not much else still original on it) that I made into a commuter bike many years ago is all I have now. Used to put on a couple thousand miles a year, but now I need to carry too much stuff from work and have a few 100+ mile days a month. I miss being stronger, healthier and thinner...

I’m gonna need some help from the experts here.

I know at least @Supr4Lo has been inside a transfer case. And @CygnusX191 is a tech if I’m not mistake? Manual 4runner transfer cases aren’t quite the same as tacomas, but there might be some commonalities, so I’d thought I’d ask.

Yesterday I tried to engage 4wd while at around 20-25mph, but the thing grinds loud. Enough for me to stop trying immediately. It’s never done that before. When I stopped the vehicle, it would shift into and out of 4wd just fine. Tried it again while moving a bit slower, and it ground again, yet shifted just fine while stopped. Yeah, that’s a problem.

Basically, I’m no longer able to “shift on the fly”. It otherwise drove quiet and fine in 2wd on the drive home. When I got home, I turned the front driveshaft by hand in 2wd, and didn’t like the sounds of it. Kind of a creaking sound once per turn.

That was yesterday night. Today I drain the transfer case and hear this little fella fall right to the bottom of the milk jug.

    32456EC5-40C7-4F64-8D3C-758DC9071D51.jpg

I’d just rather put it back inside and call it a day, but something tells me it has other friends at the bottom of the transfer case.

My question to the learned brethren among us, any clue what this is? It doesn’t have any break marks on it, and it looks like it might have served as a key of some sort to hold something in place. I’m afraid whatever it held in place is….umm, no longer in it’s place.

I’m wondering if this be an easy internal fix that would make it worth splitting the case for, or if it’s better to get a new one. It’s a 21 4runner Off-Road with manual Transfer case.

This is the last thing I thought would have a problem, and apparently seems rare? Searching the various forums only led to one example of someone else losing shift-on-the-fly on with a manual TC (with no real answers or info besides the problem).

I’m going to give it a try at the dealer with a warranty claim, since Im at 50k mile. However, I’m preparing for the worst. The worst would be getting a brand spanking new TC assembly myself for about 2500 to 3000bucks, which sucks, but not the most horrible thing in the world if I throw in there myself. Or doing a benchtop case-split if one of yous guys thinks the AWOL piece suggests an “easy” internal fix.

Dealers are the worst but I definitely would at least give them a shot to see if it would get warrantied. Also, a transfer case issue on any Toyota is definitely a rare occurrence as they seem to always use stout, quality transfer cases.

That's a synchro detent for the 2wd-4wd shift. And that would explain why you couldn't shift on the fly. The case is going to have to get opened to fix.

The manual I attached is for the NWF eco-crawler but has how to put them back in starting on page 17. But for them to fall out in the first place makes me wonder if something else is wrong also.

-edit they also had a manual how to just install the shift detents. I attached that as well

@McSpazatron, Rhine auto salvage in Plymouth has a xfer case from a 2018 4runner with 55K miles on it for $250. That comes with 6 month warranty also. It's an easy swap.

I was thinking about buying it to have for spare parts.....

Go for the warranty claim first. Toyota takes that stuff very seriously. As they give you any beef about it because you try to do it, drain and fill that void the warranty or whatever other BS they manage to come up with... Let me know ASAP.

Them's fighting words, sonny. Good luck getting a Toyota warranty claim done somewhere that isn't a dealership lol

    Excellent

That's a good price. Buy it anyway for... Reasons...

Haha! I absolutely knew you’d know!!! Lol. Fantastic. Yeah, I figure that little part has friends it left behind inside, but probably broken-er looking.

Well I better check on that before you snag it from me lol. Not opposed to a used transfer case that works. Just gotta see of it will work for my trim level.

I screwed up I should have bought it. Then told you I had one I'd sell you for $300. Lol

I actually had then send me a hard quote on it last week. Said it would take about a day for it to be ready to pick up (they have to pull it). Hopefully warranty will work out for you!

Don't forget to bring the part with you. Tell them it fell out of the drain plug just like you told us.

I am someone with a very open mind who is always willing to change his opinion when presented with concrete evidence. For every good dealership/dealership experience I hear about there are 20 experiences that are bad. I'm sure you are a great tech and perhaps your dealership is even good but the vast majority of them are not even anything approaching good. They lie, and screw stuff up on an alarmingly consistent basis. Because of all the vehicles I have owned I have been a member of quite a few vehicle forums and it's a universal thing for dealerships to not be good. Legitimately not one day goes by on Tacomaworld where at some point somebody posts about a dealership doing something negative whether it be leaving the vehicle a mess after an oil change, lying about doing services and not doing them, trying anything they can to get out of warrantying something, leaving a drain plug loose, leaving the skid plate/splash shield bolts loose and or missing, etc. It is downright criminal some of the things dealerships do like telling old ladies that their 36,000 Mile Camry is going to need $3,000 in "maintenance" or charging $100 to change a cabin filter.
