Shift Knob

so looking at this pic telling myself how dumb that flat screen looks i noticed the shift knob. what the hell is that, is that in fact the shift knob? looks like a wheel off a skate board.

 

The millennials will love the screen but complain it’s too small

I see nothing wrong with that shift knob, all I see is a proper shifter finally in a Tacoma again.

1st gen had it right, press a button and it moves forward and back. 2nd and 3rd gen went through the ridiculous gated automatic shifter fad Toyota had going on. 4th gen has finally returned to a shifter that moves straight forward and back.

 

Found the octogenarian.

 

After spending the last 7 days in the mountains and dust, looks like an extreme pain in the ass to clean. I miss flat basic dashes.

Toyota really cheaped out on the gauge plastic, scratches super easy compared to my old Toyotas, can’t drag a rag across it anymore. Will not hold up well over time.



While on the luxury end of the spectrum, do like the simplicity of the Rivian.

Prefer manuals, but like a gated auto over straight pull/push, has better feel to where the lever is, don’t have to look at it. Maybe that comes from driving manuals for the last 40 years.

Toyota fixed a lot with the 4th Gen, they also missed a few things too, that shift lever is one of many of them.

 

Lol, a shift knob complaint....lol

 

The start button is too high, the center vents are too low.... and square.

 

“Real” trucks have a manual trans…

 

Should have both a key and start button like on tractors and earth moving equipment.

here on maui we will not even see one on a lot until after the first of the year, i was miss reading a pic.

 

My daily driver is a six-speed manual, but when I'm in an automatic I don't want it to pretend it is a manual with a corn maze of fake gates.

I had them in my '16 Corolla and it always bugged me, I can maybe see the thought of knowing the gear position but I know that by feeling the detents as I move the shifter front to rear.

 

The auto on our Trooper was straight, always had to look at otherwise I would put it in the wrong gear. In the Taco, dunno feels more natural, seems like my mind memorizes the pattern better than counting indents. Though have mistaken drive for reverse a few times, probably because reverse on 5 speeds is on the lower right. Had my 3rd Gen almost two years now, and still go to push the clutch in. Too ingrained in my muscle memory I guess.

 

Shifter looks fine imo, but agree on that screen. Good to see we will still be able to “somewhat” manually control shifts. When I get in my truck it goes straight into S and I upshift and downshift as I see fit. Some vehicles give you D and that’s all ya get.

I noticed that the tires are too round. When will Toyota stop fucking us over!

 

Definitely needs to be less round, yet more rounderer…

 

That's an auto transmission, there is nothing to shift. It's not like your hands are going to be on it a lot as you drive. You put it in D once and drive and R once maybe per trip lol.

I'm curious to see the manual shift knob on the 2024+
I'm sure it won't look funny like the autos.
