Small Lift Options??

1) Please explain. What is the difference between springs? Why would it matter if you purchased the spring when you bought the shock or later on?

2) Again, the shock can only get set to 2.5", will the spring give it lift beyond that? If not, what is the purpose of adding a spring?

 

2 cont: If the spring does not increase lift, are there any ways to increase lift beyond the 2.5 with the bilstein shock?

 

OP , I wanna ask you a question , hopefully without sounding like a dick , but have you looked at any of the threads in the suspension section ?

I can suggest some for you that would provide you with some of this background info so you will be more informed when you make your choice of set up .

 

When you use the billys up front at 1.75 or 2.5 with the stock springs you are preloading the spring , ie stretching it ,with the shocks to provide the lift . As you increase the preload , you stiffen the ride .

If you buy longer springs , the springs provide the lift , and the shocks are set at 0 .

Q# 2 first.. In the basic (cheapest) of ways, there are 3 ways to do a basic lift. (1) spacers (no good), (2) adjustable shocks (i.e. 5100s) (3) lift springs (i.e. OME, Eibach). 5100s can give you up to 2.5" all by themselves. You can get more height than that, but you are adding components to the 5100s. (i.e. coilover kit, small trim spacer, etc).

Q#1... say you want around 2.5".. and do it with springs.. with the eibach springs, you would set the 5100s to the .85" setting, add in the 1.somthing" eibachs, and yeild around a 2.5" or so lift. If you go with the OME 884/885 springs (and use 5100s), the 5100s would be set to the 0" setting. Thus, you are negating the "lifting" ability of the 5100s. In that case, you could have gone with another brand/type of shock because the springs are doing your lifting for you.

 

Is it possible to get just new springs and use with your stock TRD Off-Road Bilstein shocks?

If so, how would it affect the ride?

If you want 1-2 inch try the Bilstein 5100's. If you want 2-3 inches, get the Eibach coils w/or w/out the Bilsteins. If you decide on the Bilstein/Eibach combo then you might as well spend just a little bit more $ and get an OME lift.

I originally wanted to keep everything around $300, but then I realized that I would have to up my budget as well.

 

Based on search/reading here, I chose the Toytec OME kit with 885s, no spacers, and the 1.5" AAL. TW discount applied. I consider this a mild no worry lift.

I'm pretty anal about mods and did not want to sacrifice any ride quality or road characteristics. I'm happy to report full satisfaction with my choice. I had 3" of lift up front and 1.5" in the rear. The front has settled some and is a solid 2.5" or a hair more now. Truck looks and rides great.

Easy choice IMO. I did the install with a buddy and a rented tool from Autozone. Took about 5 hours with a break for beer after finishing the front.

 

So adding the springs after you have the billys is basically to just improve the ride?

I think if I understood the spring shock relationship, a lot of questions would be answered.

 

How does the quality of the stock shocks are the Off Road compare to those on the Sport? Do you think someone would want to buy the stock OR shocks?

 

Did you install UCA's? Why dont the OME kits come with this since it is needed with 3 inch lift?

 

What is the problem with using the Billsteins set at 2.5 and either of the springs? Why do you have to reduce the length of the shock?

 

Some of the 3 inch kits don't have as many alignment issues **I may be slightly off here**. If the UCA's were included with the OME kit then the cost would be almost doubled.

The OME kit has multiple coils that you can get. Some of the coils lift ~3 inches, others lift a little less.

1 Lifting with coils is better than with the bilsteins alone, and it would improve the ride quality.
2 iirc, the sport and OR shocks are the same (I can't be positive though)
3 iirc you could overextend the shock or something.
4 2-3 inches may require UCA's, but you could probably let it slide. Much bigger than 3 inches and UCA's would probably be needed.

Okk so if I set billys at 2.5" in the front, add a 2" AAL and billys in the rear and I am lookin good? Will this sit pretty level? Seems like everyone sets theres at 1.75" if they dont have a UCA. Is there that much of a risk?What is the worst that can happen not getting a UCA? Tire wear?

 

So is one better off just getting coils in the front, bilsteins and AAL in the rear?

or Lift and keep the factory rake ?
