The exhaust plume didn't look symmetrical so suspected it had a dogleg!

 

I watched it go south of me, and I'm down in San Diego. Glad someone posted pics, because it did look awesome.

 

I think it means they started West of due South and veered back to East of South after clearing the islands. The decrease in satellite payload is the consequence of the dogleg burn. That course would keep it well out to sea paralleling the coast to orbit.

I wonder what minimum fuel retained is required to maintain structural integrity? Probably less in vacuum but still a non zero quantity. Running out of fuel seems to have more dire consequences than a cough and sputter. Is it the same for Falcons or will Starships require a larger margin upon landing essentially factoring that amount into dry mass?

Hey @Hunterdc1 , is the Banana Creek Launch Viewing Area at the Apollo/Saturn V Center the same as the famous countdown clock viewing area?

Negative the Saturn V center is north of the VAB on Kennedy Pkwy/SR-3. The countdown clock area was at the LC-39 press site which is directly south across the street from the VAB. Press site overlooks the Wharf where I greeted the SLS Core stage when it arrived and took vacuum readings as one of the first 40 or so people on the barge. That wharf/water is typically in the background of old clock shots looking E/NE.

How can a free return test out the systems it needs to?

 

You mean like docking equipment? That’s really all it has to do beyond what A-1 did. The maneuvering testing will be done before leaving earth orbit.
