I’ve got a 99 taco with a 2.7l . It has 340,000 and never had a drop of trouble out of it until the converter clogged up and I had to chop it off to get home. It ran like crap all the way home. Once I arrived I turned off the motor . Well that was 8 months and $5000 + ago. I have replaced every sensor , battery, alternator , mass air flo, fuel pump, every filter , plugs wires (4times) I’m at Witt’s end. It starts and idles and as soon as you touch the accelerator it spits and dies. No codes no engine light . Toyota is clueless . riddle me this riddle me that! Any ideas?

I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
What do you mean Toyota is clueless??? I had a somewhat similar problem without the $5000, and I took it to a shop and the found the problem. Of coarse I would never bring it to the shop, but what ever.Sometimes a different set of eyes

    Welcome to the Forum!

Most Toyota techs might never have seen a vehicle this old them being clueless is easy to under stand.

just what caused the Cat to be blocked?

Have you just fired the parts cannon no trouble shooting ?

No leak down test / No compression test ? No fuel pressure test??

    No electrical troubleshooting?

All the replaced parts have been tested and all had failed?

You had the original issue now having introduced many more unknowns.

Any Good friends that live and breathe Tacoma`s

    Best of Luck.

    Good Luck

I’m not exactly sure when I pulled the intake the engine doge was full of sludge . Compression was good all components have checked out and no codes flashing and no engine light on . I have spoke to numerous mechanics and had two come to my shop no one can figure it out. I started at the exhaust and went up to the motor and I’m stumped.

And this this is the third fuel pump and third filter and a full tank of new gas. I first thought fuel pump but it’s got plenty of pressure when I pulled the injectors I didnt put one back in all the way and it was blowing gas everywhere so pressure is good. The only catch in the get along is I did not put the converter back on. I’ve pulled the EFI fuse and left the truck unplugged for a month so everything should have reset itself but is cranks right up but you look at the gas pedal and it’s done.

I spoke to Toyota on the phone (as the closest dealership is 75 miles one way for me and a wrecker is $500 one way) and talked to the head tech and explained the problem. I asked him what you would troubleshoot first and go down the list before I spend $185/hr (Toyota mechanic)and $500 (wrecker)on top of the $5k already spent . He basically went down the list I’d already done and put me on a 20min hold

My truck has been down 8 months and my other daily driver just went down this weekend . Any help would be greatly appreciated I’m at a loss and can’t figure it out . I forgot to add I put in all new vacuum lines also. I’m to the point of trashing the motor and putting a C4 Cummings I have in it

You really need to get a scanner with graphing abilities and observe what's going on when the engine dies. There's so many different avenues to take if you go in blind so that would be my first step.

We did use a graph and it didn’t real show anything it just looked like it was running too lean or not getting fuel at all so I cracked open the injector port and it’s getting plenty of fuel so it’s kinda become a local soap opera amoungst us guys everyone is stumped. I’m ready to chop the frame straight axel the front end and dump a c4 Cummins in it myself I just thought I’d give it one more shot before it goes under the knife

Mine was a sensor on the very back on top of the head....Took me forever to get it. I also had plug wire issues. Ive been thru five sets in twenty years, so I was very surprised. I fially got a scanner, and that has saved my butt a whole bunch of times. My jeep needs the code checker all the time.

    340,000 miles!

The cat was indeed plugged unburned gas will cause this.

At any time has the firing of the injectors been checked with noid lights ??

Has the engine timing been checked ? Jumped timing it might have dumped enough raw fuel into the cat but it should have taken some time. The compression should have been off but maybe not enough to make a big difference.

The circuit opening relay is remaining pulled in with the engine running ?

Cranking allows the engine to start then the relay drops out and it dies.

this would not trip a code . It might have worked intermittent that got you home

    Some fresh ideas Good luck!

Roger that . I have had zero problems in 340,000 miles except 3 batteries and the air conditioning until this and this is my runaround /hunting truck / whatever comes up truck I don’t baby it I drive the shit out of it and hands down this is best truck / vehicle I have ever owned in my life. I’m 50 yrs and owned around 200 vehicles in my life and this truck is number 1 and never for sale ! Any other vehicle would have been pushed in the pasture and used for target practice or sold but it’s been too good a truck so I’m committed . These trucks are hard to find they are hauling them daily across the border in caravans 1 yoda pulling two behind it I see it everyday. A guy pulled up to the gas station I was at year before last and offered my $7500 right there and pulled it out of his pocket and I laughed at him . No way I’d take $7500 ever

Also on the vacuum switch valve should I be getting ohm reading off the two legs on the switch? When connected to 12 volt I should hear the switch engage correct?

First pictures online are random pictures unless someone might be selling used parts taking pictures of the for sale item.

On a VSV your reading the coil when good depending on your meter it should read close to 0 if it is open it will a overload or unlimited .

If you can hear the vsv depends on your hearing and the ambient noise level .

It will be open or closed you should feel air moving through when open.

I hope that answers your questions.

    Good luck.
