Add backup cam to 2nd gen

I have a 2013 base Tacoma and need help adding a backup cam. My friend let me try plugging in his cam to the harness in the tailgate, but it did not activate.

Need help what to buy to add a cam to the stock radio. Head unit 57054

I think the OEM backup camera is mounted in the tailgate handle. I've found several of these cameras available on Ebay but I have no idea on the quality of any of them:

I'd feel a bit inclined to mount the camera in the license plate bezel just because I don't want to change out my liftgate handle but that's up to you!

 

Did you get this figured out? I just installed a reverse camera in my 2014 A/C Base, my reverse camera mounted right next to the tailgate handle. I had a pigtail all the way to the dummy camera, all I had to to was replace the dummy camera with the aftermarket one I purchased this camera worked fine after changing some contrast settings in the head unit, night time wasn’t the best, really thinking about returning this item for a used oem camera for about $60-70 more, just because it doesn’t see the greatest at night, (5%tint)but it does the job.here is the link to this camera https://www.ebay.com/itm/1153400912...qpgpipWRiK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I ordered this from Crutchfield. Comes with the split harness for behind the radio and the camera plugs into the pre wired outlet in the tailgate.

does this set up connect the wire harness at the fuse panel below the steering wheel to the head unit?

seems like we have the same truck, so i also assume you didn't have to run any wiring under the body of the car since its "pre-wired" other than the camera and the head unit hook up?

also did you have to do any wire splices or any cutting into the reverse switch at the kickplate? or was it pretty much plug and play?

 

@boulderguy No splicing. Plug and play. Yes, the T-harness goes from the radio to the kick panel. No need to run wires from the front to the camera, its already there. Just have to plug in the camera. You do have to drill a hole in the delete plate on tailgate handle for the camera. Comes with small hole saw.

 

I'm really surprised yours isn't pre-wired...I have a 2014 Prerunner and my head unit looks a lil different than yours, it is a non-JBL....i boutght an OEM camera off Amazon, plugged it in and it works like a charm. I did check to see if there was a plug or wires in place prior to purchasing.

 

the tailgate on mine has a dummy plug for the camera harness in the tailgate, so i may also buy an aftermarket camera in addition to the harness you recommended to avoid drilling holes. Then in theory i can plug the aftermarket camera into the tailgate and insert into the handle in place of the dummy. alll that would be left is the t harnesses from the kick plate to the head unit after that i think

 

Kit comes with a camera, just have to pop out the plate and drill it.

 

Want to install a backup cam in my 2014 rc. I do have a 6 wire connector in the tailgate, however these wires go into another connector under the bumper and only one wire goes out (green) so NG just plugging in a camera like in post #5. Also radio (same as in post 5) doesn't have trigger wire installed but that can be added. I looked at the crutchfield kit listed above but that is for 12,13 tacoma. Don't know what the difference is but it does not appear to have enough wire to get rom the camera to the radio. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Did you ever figure this out? I appear to be in the same position.
