Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

I'm a little confused. Are the part numbers in the first post still valid, or did they discontinue some stuff or make it really difficult to get? need to work on the brakes and trying to figure out which route to go

 

Part numbers are still valid.

The TRD pads fit 3rd Gen, despite the PN stating only 2nd Gen years. There was a shortage of the pads a while back, but I believe they are available again. The pads are the same compound as StopTech Sports.

The rotors were changed slightly with the same part number I believe, the newer rotor now weighs the same as stock.

 

Hey @crashnburn80 what do you think of these Adaptive One Performance rotors from NAPA? I believe Raybestos makes them. Just picked them up on sale for $124 each. Weight looks to be 22lbs. However, veins are inverted like OEM. Haven’t looked to see if it has more vines yet.

I am unfamiliar with those. Based on the reviews on NAPA's site, the slotting looks very shallow, having the rotor turned 0.010 resulted in slotting nearly being eliminated.

For weight, compare your OEM take offs vs the new units on the same scale. My weight comparisons were accurate between units, but slightly skewed by setting the rotor far enough to the side to capture the measurement in a picture resulting in a slightly lighter than actual measurement. The big gain in the rotors is the internal cooling veins, if you can get some calipers to measure the distance between veins that would tell you if the rotors have more internal cooling surface area or not, which would allow them to better resist brake fade under heavy use.

“Had my brakes recently done and they turned my rotors, this was the first brake job since I did my brakes last time, which was roughly 40k miles ago. After they turned them, 1 rotor lost almost all the "slots" the other is still showing slots. Unfortunately this is considered wear, so I either live with 1 slotted rotor, and 1 non slotted up front. Or buy a new set of rotors. If I have to turn the rears when the brakes are replaced, they will lose all marks as well. The rotors both got turned .010 and are still well above safe limits. Needless to say I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, and won't be getting them again. They look good, but aren't practical after 1 rotor turn”

He claims it only happen on one of the two rotors? Wouldn’t t that indicate brake PAD failure?

 

It would likely indicate grooving on one rotor, where that rotor had to be turned more aggressively to eliminate the grooving. If both rotors were turned .010 then they should look the same, unless the manufacturing tolerances on the slotting depth were very sloppy. Hard to say if these are decent or not. I personally prefer simplistic slots over fancy designs. Their slots also seem shallow. You'd need to measure the vein count to see how it compares to stock, the rotor page offers no information about improved internal vein cooling abilities, just the slot "cool track venting".

 

I can’t seem to find stoptech cryos in stock anywhere online. Anyone have a lead or suggestions on a second choice rotor?

Edit2: Of course it’s a shipping thing. None of the 4 sellers that have the R side will ship to AK. Amazon is also claiming that they won’t fit my 2019 Tacoma. When logged in I can’t select other buying options. Has to be a mobile issue

That elusive right rotor is mocking me… When I add to cart at buybrakes that one shows not in stock. I’m not really in a rush, so I suppose I could just grab a lefty from the jungle, piece together the trd pads and brake lines and then keep an eye out for the right one

Pads in my ‘16 are at 5mm. Would you guys run them down to 3 or swap out proactively?

 

5mm seems relatively decent, but could always be better. But I also change my tires preemptively at 30k because I don't roll on old rubber. So I might not be the best to ask.

 

Anyone in here have experience with Hawk HP superduty pads?

I got myself set-up with the GX470 brake "kit" and realized I got the wrong pads/caliper for my rotor... I originally bought stoptech sport pads and 13wa calipers, but came across comparably priced hawk pads when looking at options for the correct 14wa calipers...
On tire racks site they rank the hawks as having one bar better stopping power vs the stoptech sports.

Any input on either pad?


Edit: I’m pretty sure I mean 13WH and the 14WA from the newer GX460s

Based on the Ferro-Carbon compound statement they sound like a semi-metalic pad, which can have higher COF but also much harder on the rotor and far worse NVH than ceramics. I'd speculate NVH is pretty bad if Hawk specifically says not recommend for personal vehicles.

the GX I think, is the 14WB. I always though the 4runnner and GX are different. The T4R 5th gen are 14WA. But it could be similar. I had the 14WA 5th gen calipers for a bit with stock pads. I had picked up TRD pads but switched out before I got to use them.

Also depending on rotors setup grab a set of DBA 4000 rotors. I was going to upgrade to those as well from Stoptech Slottted (which also worked well).

Different pads HAWK street which are equivalent to the stoptech sports are solid. I have those on my front Stoptechs. SOS now for example stocks HAWK pads over the Stoptech sports for all their setups.
