Hey all, my 2014 trd sport randomly (its happened 3 times in last 2 months) will stay stuck in 4. Rpms Rev high when over 70. If I move the shifter to 4 then back into D it seems to resolve it.

A little background original owner. Just turned 100k. Had a trans fluid change/not flush at 70k. Truck is 100% bone stock. It's summer so cold temps not an issue.

    LMK what you guys think
    Thanks

Welcome to Tacoma World! Who did the trans fluid change and what type of fluid was used?

Searching using Google returns lots of possible answers but we won't be able to tell over the internet. You may need to get it scanned with TechStream or a diagnostic scanner that can read transmission codes.

    It is.

If you put the selector in "D" it is supposed to shift to OD (5th gear) when conditions are right. Putting the selector in 4 will not let it shift above 4th gear.

If you had the transmission fluid changed 30,000 miles ago and the problem just started I doubt if that is the problem. Fluid related transmission problems are rare, it is usually something electrical.

Thank you for the replies. Of course it has not occurred again. I've been using the same mechanic for over a decade. He has been solid and uses oem parts and fluids for me. I'm going to have him scan it next oil change. I will report back when he does. Also the check engine light is not on. We will see...

Funny that you mention that because that is exactly what am dealing with right now. I just made a thread about it. I have a 2WD 2001 Tacoma with a 4-speed that doesn't shift into overdrive, plus I think the transmission is draining the battery overnight. I've narrowed it down to a bad neutral safety switch or solenoid. But any input would be much appreciated.

Mine was doing this for a while. Best I could figure in my research it was only when it the trans fluid was cold. I think it's a possibility that it warms up in 4th and will hit 5th when it's ready.

thanks for your input. I just figured out that I can turnover the car in neutral, I didn't know that, turns out that Aisn A44D transmissions in first-gen Tacoma's can turnover in both Parking and Neutral. I can only turnover the car in park for now, not in neutral so am betting it's the neutral safely switch because of that. I move the shifter up and down the gears on the column and magically the car starts so it's probably bad, dirty or worn contacts on that switch. My transmission oil is in great condition and at the right level. It never slipped gears so I don't believe that to be the culprit. I hope this info helps anyone else with a similar problem in their 2001 tacos.

Mine definitely was warmed up both times I noticed it occurring. And side note it has not happened again

Mine has done the same a few times over the years, typically on an incline. Maybe @gearcruncher has an idea why.

could it be a dclb thing?
