Toyota Oil Filter (Made in Thailand) vs. the competition........

I would be surprised if they aren't the same everything except the filtering media. When I asked the passing question of what the diff was the NAPA Rep said that the Filtering Media in the Platnum was of higher grade and made for synthetic oil. Now what this means is anybody's guess etc.

Just took a moment and found this. Size or part number most likely will reflect continued differences according to application needs. But this is good information nonetheless. Doesn't quite go the way one would expect. But it's a new world in advertising these days. Oddly, I couldn't find a date of production, etc...

I was wondering if there were any taller/bigger filter options and got my answer. I'll be trying out the Napa on my next oil change I think. More filtering capability is always a plus and the OEM filter just looks a bit small for a fairly large V6 engine.

 

I always use a Toyota D3 or Fram Ultra. Just stay away from Purolator.

They used to be good, now they're garbage.

I’m going to try a Baldwin B2 next. I don’t know for certain it’s going to fit, on paper it will. I’ll get a Napa 1516 just in case it doesn’t fit.

Well, I went with the OEM filter this time because I couldn't find this thread again to make sure I bought the right NAPA filter. When I looked them up on NAPA's website, they have them available but it says not compatible with my Tacoma. Shouldn't have second-guessed it and just bought one but oh well. Next time I'll give the bigger filter a try.

So today I compared the Toyota YZZD3(PRS3600) and the Part Source OE+ PRS3614(YZZD1). Both filter have 5000km and were used with 5W-30 Synthetic oil.

The metal housings are the same they both have a silicone anti drain valve and O-ring. I preferer the OE+, reasons for this include that the filter is capped at both ends, and the bypass vale is integrated in the filter canister unlike the Toyota that is glued and the bypass valve is just sitting on the bottom of the filter held with spring pressure that would have the possibility of leaking between the valve and the filter. The spring in the OE+ is only to hold the filter to the bypass valve sandwiching it to the bottom of the filter. The OE+ filter is textured for your pleasure and in my opinion is a great quality replacement filter for $11 Canadian. If you'd like the larger version the OE+ PRS3600 is slightly taller that the YZZD3.

 

that OE+ is double the price of the toyota one though. i buy the YZZD3 by the case form Amazon and it works out to ~$5.50/filter

 

Last time I bought a Toyota filter it cost me $13.72. the OE+ cost me $7.53 with my discount at Partsource.

 

~If you plan on not keeping your truck long go for the cheapest filter, if you desire the best filtration to keep the harmful micro particles out of your engine go with best filter you can buy. Toyota wants to sell their filters as a cheap leader to create more overall Toyota revenue and brand loyalty. In truth, they don't want your engine to last 500,000 miles they want to sell you more everything.

 

yeah I guess they’re just more expensive in Canada. All I know is I can get a case of 10 for $55 shipped to my door. The parts house price on the one you posted was over $11

LOL imagine if that were true. Is their new motto “Let’s build a shitty engine so people keep coming back?” I believe you’re getting your Toyotas mixed up with your Fords. Toyota builds to last, if you don’t believe me then check their record from the last ohhhhh idk 70 something years.

I’ll trust Toyotas engineers on the choice of oil filter though.
