    Hey y’all.

So, firstly, I’m not really worried about this.. per se. I just found it strange and unexplainable.

Took a drive to town, in my 18 TRD OR, picked up a few things and then went home.

When I got home, I shut the truck off, opened the door and hopped out. Upon shutting the door I heard… what sounded like a tin rattling in the driver fender area. Closest kin sound would be if you bend one of those floor bendable door stoppers lol.

Anyway, I could reproduce it 100% if the time. I even went to the passenger side, and it was the same thing! Only, I honestly couldn’t tell if it was just reflecting the force to the other side of the engine bay (assuming it was rattling something internal).

Well, I didn’t bother to look for anything, just went inside. Later on, I said fuck it, and went to investigate. First thing I did was try to recreate the sound.. and it didn’t happen.. at all.

I’m just curious.. has anyone ever heard of this? I’ll look around the engine bay tomorrow, to see if anything came loose and fell down by the fender or something, but I guess I was just perplexed.

Really though, probably the cats cooling down like posted above. They can make a pinging metallic sound as the metal contracts when cooling.

Yes, yes I have. I have not bothered to track it down. Why, you may ask.... I only inspect noises if they get louder and longer.

Nope, that isn't it. Only when you sut the door,a noise from the driver side wheel well makes a metal pinging sound.

Could be that part of the frame or what ever where the motor mount is that's cracked on that one guys truck. Could be getting hot from the exhaust manifold cooling back down and cracking from the force of closing the door.

If it only happens when one of the doors is shut, it may be one of those covered, one-way vents to let air pressure out of the cab so the door shuts easily (don’t remember what they’re called)
I’ve heard mine make a tinny, rattling noise a few times when I slam the door shut but the noise always comes from between the cab and box.
If you can replicate the sound, put a window down before shutting the door and see if it stops and then you’ll know they’re the cause..

Nope, not that. Definitely comes from the driver's side wheel well when door is being shut.

I would say it is the cats cooling down...
I wait in my truck when I pick my daughter from time to time and there is this rhythmic ping that echoed and was tough to pin point. Took me a while to figure it out until I was parked in the right spot and the sound clearly came from the cats. It doesn't even happen all the time.

Got a rock in the cab mount cavity that bounces around when the door is shut?

Not that I am aware of. It's not that kind of sound. I have a 2017 sr5, bought in Sept of 2016. Have had 3 different suspensions on it, 3 different sets of tires. I have gotten good at diagnosising noise on this thing in 6 years. As i said, as long as it doesn't get longer or louder.... meh. Who cares. It works , gets me from point a to point b just fine.

Yep happened on my '21 SR Tacoma
As you say not always but on occasion
Mine is/was the underside metal oil pan guard housing that caused the rattle
