My 31st oil change was different than the first 30 oil changes (2nd Gen, 4.0L, 4WD, 150k miles) in that oil didn't spill all over when removing the oil filter. I've always changed my own oil. My first step, even before getting the 14mm socket or oil catcher is to get an empty water bottle from the recycling bin to wedge under the oil filter base to catch the 2 or 3 ounces that leak all over. This time only about a teaspoon of dirty oil leaked out and was easily wiped with a rag.

The old filter was a Fram Extra Guard and did have an anti-siphon ring on it. I usually get whatever filter/oil combination is on sale. I have no personal preference so have used all brands. The engine was cold and had been sitting a few hours. After completing the change, I do see a solid/steady stream of oil through the filler tube hitting the chain. Doesn't look like an oil pressure issue. No engine/valve noise. No CEL, Maint Req'd, or Oil light on.

Obviously I'm over thinking it but it was definitely unusual. Wait 5,000 miles or should I change the filter in a few miles and see what happens? Anyone else ever have an empty filter when changing?

Probably didn‘t have any oil in because the engine was cold. I‘ve always done oil changes warm since it apparently mixes up all the gunk in the oil and drains better.

It’s probably a bad anti-drain back valve in the filter.
It happens. Don’t worry about it.

I've let it sit 24hrs before and still have gotten a significant amount in the 'catch bottle' so don't believe it was just from sitting for a few hours.

After some reading prior to posting, that is what I was thinking. I guess I don't understand how the anti-siphon works though and why it would dump the oil out of the filter once its unscrewed.

Varies, I have oem ones dribble, some dump, doesnt matter.

My trick is I crack the filter before draining, let it burp, then gently tighten it so it tricks the drain back to release pressure. Very little comes out.

Interesting! Well, my next change I will do it normally, unscrew and hope it dumps into the bottle to make it feel like a 'normal' change. But the change AFTER that I will try that!
