4.0 peak TQ @4400 RPM
3.5 peak TQ @4600 RPM




Did you get a chance to drive a 4R recently?

 

Exactly my experience, except when the 3.5L just keeps on going past 5k RPMs.

Did you actually drive a 3rd Gen AT/MT truck? Or are you just echoing what’s being repeated on this forum.

I barely go over 3k RPMs, plenty of power there. I cruise in 1250-1350 RPM range, my truck is far from stock either.

 

So where is that torque in real life when you step on the 3rd gen

 

Yes, been driving the 3rd gen for nearly 7 years. Its tuned now.

 

200 RPMs higher than the 4Runner.

From seeing a couple dyno charts on the 3.5L, it makes ~80% of its peak torque at ~2200 RPMs or so.

 

2.7 or 3.5?

 

Thankfully the 2.7. I drove the 3.5 and the sad part it didnt feel much more powerful than the 2.7. The 4.0 i have is better.

 

That’s shocking because 3.5 has like 90 more TQ and like 120 more HP. The 2.7 does have 4.30 gears though.

In the city I can kind of see how both trucks could feel similar, but on the highway the 3.5 definitely takes the cake.

 

My wife's 11 4Runner feels more solid then my 19 Tacoma.
It's got over 150,000 on it and have never had an issue. No recalls either.
No gear hunting in the Runner but it def has no top end.
I prefer to drive it around town over my truck.
When I punch it in either vehicle I'd take the 3.5.

 

Stop looking at peak TQ numbers. It means nothing. Need to look at TQ numbers at lower RPM numbers. 4400 or 4600 rpm is now down low in the RPM range.

 

I know they both share the same transmission. I was expecting too much from the 3.5 i guess. But i only drive my 2.7 to work and back. Having a tuned 2.7 is actually pretty fun to drive around.

 

I can't argue against KDSS. Although, in hindsight, I'd have probably skipped it if I bought again right now.

What I'm saying is that the PRO 4runners come to the US as an ORP, and then they throw on the Fox shocks and don't realign them. So, it's possible the alignment was no good, regarding the wandering feeling.

There's definitely pros and cons to both. It really comes down to if you want a bed or a wagon. I'd love to have both.

 

That 4Runner is truly a dinosaur from another time. Wait two years for the new 4Runner or take a look at the LC when it comes out tomorrow.

 

I would love to take a tuned manual transmission 2.7 for a spin!

 

Toyota is boasting 465 TQ numbers from the 2.4t hybrid i-ForceMax in the 4th gen. I can't wait to see how that works.

 

the 3rd gen frame, suspension brakes and many other parts are almost identical to the 2nd gen Tacoma which came out in 2005. 3rd gen is a dinosaur too.

It still has drum brakes..

 

I really do think that the 4R will be a bit more reliable in the long run vs 3rd Gen, so there is that.
