I know Orbit makes a remote start for 3rd gen tacomas that doesn't turn off when you open the door. It also let's you take the key out of the ignition and keep the car parked and running

Will you have a cell package for this proposed door-defeat system? I most often start my truck at a distance greater than remote range. At home, it’s in the garage and I don’t need to remote start. At work or out on the town, it’s distant. In Texas, I need more than 50 yards range otherwise there’s really not much benefit.

I have factory remote start and it works well enough.

I would only upgrade to a standalone if it had app control and defeated the door shutdown, otherwise I would be paying more for what I already have. Increased install time would not deter me.

get your head out of the 90's....85% of new vehicles have a auto start/stop function. Technology is way beyond that.

Would I still be able to use the OEM app, would it use its own app, or would it only be from the fob?

If there is a way to mod my OEM remote start so that it acted like every other modern remote start then I’m all-in, and I would drop some dime on it. Would it require me to depress the brake and push the start button to move the vehicle? Will it still shut off if someone tries to engage the vehicle without the key in hand?

My 2020 Armada works as you describe. Far superior to the Tacoma method.

There is no workaround what you see there is simply opening the door pin which does nothing to allow a normal takeover of the vehicle. We aren't releasing a "hack" to the current system as there isn't one. This is a complete new setup to allow full normal safe takeover. Thanks!

That's not the impression I had, but you'd probably have to ask Jimmy or one of the guys at @N2DesignsInc to know for sure?

I disagree as well. The map lights are on, so unless they specifically turned them on to give the false impression, then the door switch is operable. I also don't think it would be smart, however not impossible I suppose, for a well-known brand like N2 to make claims as substantial as that without having some theory or idea of their path forward.

Sorry not familiar with the video, but there are a lot of ways we can keep the current remote start working with the door open/closed etc - the door pin is just one of them. We can program the door pin out completely and the remote start won't care in the least if it's opened or closed. The door being open/closed is fairly irrelevant to the "takeover" process as a whole and doesn't get you any closer to driving off without the vehicle shutting down for the current options out there. There is no "path forward" with the current remote starts on the market if that makes sense - it's a take or leave it with the vehicle shutting down and no way around it. Sorry if that wasn't clear but stay tuned :)

almost every manufacturer works that way.

I know why Toyota decided to go this route though. Most people that use remote start, let the car/truck idle in the driveway, then get in and take off.
When I do that in my Subaru it affects my total MPG. I’m averaging 18.7 MPG in my wife’s Outback because of it idling in the driveway for freaking ever. But it is accurate. On Toyota, you can leave it running in your driveway, then when you open the doors, the car/truck shuts off. More importantly your trip MPG resets. Now Toyota doesn’t get a bunch of calls wondering why their trip MPG is like 11 MPG every time they take their kid to school. They probably get a 1/4 of the complaints or less now. And that is only from people that know how remote start is supposed to work.

Would I upgrade? Probably not. The N2 does what I need it to and the shut down is more of a minor annoyance which I only notice when I want to warm up the truck in the winter and load items at the same time.

Would I have purchased one that doesn't shut down had it been available? Absolutely.

You obviously don't live where it gets to -20 to -30 for days on end and is below zero for months. You don't "just get in, drive, and wait for the ac or heat to do its thing..." when all the windows have heavy ice and snow on them and the tranny will barely get in to gear. The engine barely gets to running temperature after 15 minutes. Maybe you don't need a remote start but there are millions that do.

Around here people would start the vehicle, scrape all the windows then go inside til it warmed up. Usually +- 15 minutes. Remote starters make life more bearable in cold climates.

Yeah, it’s a luxury for sure. And one I paid for. But I doubt anybody would accept if Toyota told them they could save $250 if they disable the quick heat/cool option on the truck and your climate control wouldn’t work for the first 15 minutes after you started it.
