By this logic, you should be terrified that the 3.5 has an 11.8:1 compression ratio instead of a more truck-like 8:1 for longevity.

I caught the part where he says they "beefed up" the turbo. Does he talk about the additional wear and tear and stress on the engine and what they did to address it? The turbo was never my concern. It's the engine itself. Imagine how many steps a 4 foot person must take to keep up with a 6 foot person. That's kind of (crudely) how a turbo 4 vs 6 is. The turbo engine runs hotter under more pressure which wears out parts faster. I'm also curious what the changes are to the engine like if they switched to an aluminum head... I honestly don't know. I'm not aware of any specific engine details.

EDIT: He starts talking about the engine at 13:30. Watching that now...

They didn’t “switch to” an aluminum head. Every Tacoma ever built has had aluminum heads.

TFL did a segment with him and he (Sheldon) stated they are using 50% new parts for their engine. Would be nice if it was a turbo 6 instead of a turbo 4.

The only thing I got from watching the whole video is that the new turbo is commercial grade and that it is tested to the same standard as the previous Tacoma.

Imagine...if it was a V8 turbo instead haha. One can dream.

The v8 turbo would absolutely scream. If they built that this would be the ultimate street truck. I can't imagine how bad the gas mileage would be though.

Some of the design features of the 2024 are pretty slick. The Toyota guy in the video knows this thing really well. This is probably the most in-depth video I've seen on them so far. Thanks for the link BTW.

The only thing the 3rd gen Tacoma is delivering is anemic power.

The only issue will be the price. These new trucks are so expensive. Had a perfect 3rd gen. Planned on riding it till it died. Then had a kid lol. Taco became too small really fast. With the car seat in, no one could ride in the passenger seat. Quite frustrating. Upgraded to a used Tundra. Gas mileage is a bit worse, but the space is amazing. I would of waited for the new Tacoma. But I doubt I could have afforded it or had the space. Hope you don’t want to keep the new one more than 10 years. Battery will need replacing. Problem is there isn’t enough lithium and cobalt to replace all these batteries. Almost like they know that’s the case…..o_O anyhow, looks like a sweet truck.

Seriously! I don’t need a tundra. I just need about 3-5 more inches of length in the cab in the Tacoma.

Commercial grade sounds a little buzzwordy. Commercial applications can fail same as any other mechanical application. Even when not being worked to their full capacity. Does make for a good sales pitch and sounds reassuring, and it could very well be true.

It uses a NiMh battery, so that wouldn’t be an issue. Also there an estimated 79 million metric tons of lithium reserves in the world that can be mined, more than enough to meet expected demand.

Well we will have to see what changes they made to the internals when it’s released. Regardless Toyota puts durability above both performance and efficiency when it comes to testing their engines. The 2.4 in the transverse applications is most likely already a 250k powertrain, so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a more durable version exceeding the 300k mark like all the NA engines were capable of. Heads, pistons, crankshaft, conrods etc, were most likely designed with boost in mind. Yea a turbo engine works harder but the internals are designed for that excess stress from the beginning. The tech they have to use to meet new regulations changes but their durability standards will remain the same. Because of this it has benchmarked against the same reliability standards that the previous NA engines had to meet. I think there will be harsher penalties for people who slack on maintenance on the new gen. Wondering if toyota will recommend a lower OCI than the 10k interval of the current 3.5.

Was wondering this too. It's one thing to "drive" a turbocharged car. It's another thing to drive one aggressively where you're feeling the boost come on. Burnt engine oil is pretty common. I can't imagine a 10k interval on a turbo car. I changed mine every 3k and I swear that wasn't always enough.

This is the beauty of it all, some peeps want a 4 cylinder turbo and others would rather consider adding the Magnuson Supercharger for $8 to 9$ k-s, or not. I for one don't want to loose a pound on towing capacity. I don't want to pay those proposed prices. I don't want to having to deal with the Toyota dealers, their mark-ups, and the whole scheme that you can't test-drive the truck until after your pre-ordered prize arrives finally in 12 weeks time or something like that. Plus Toyota is coming up with that hassle of monthly service contracts to allow you to move the steering wheel (pay 2.95$ for every 90 degrees and pay 9.95$ a month to be able to remote start your car... bla bla bla). I have now been owning 7 toyota cars and trucks since 2011 and wanted to upgrade mine and my wife's. I am starting to think I am Toyota-d-out with all the BS. This is not to say I will never look at the 4th Gen Tacoma. For now I am not seeing anything that interests me more than what I already have in the 3rd Gen. The lame-duck power issue and gear hunting can be easily solved with about $800 - get a improved cold-air-intake, and get a KDMAX gear-programming, or go all the way to the Supercharger install - pricey though. The rear squatting - easy, get air bags even as easy as $1,500 and you can control them from the cockpit. I paid $35,500 for my 2021 4x4 TRD Sport in Feb 2021. I am not in the mood to pay now $55K.

How does a supercharger work exactly? So if you add a supercharger on top of your regular 3.5L V6 NA, it won't wear out your NA engine faster? Is it a separate component so if it dies (supercharger), you still have your NA engine? But unlike a turbo, you have two engines instead of one? Is that how it works?

Man, I just realize large 1/2 ton pickup trucks in the past started at 28K...that the same price as a Tacoma today... WTH!

I don't think the sport will ever be 55K or the Tacoma halo trim to be the same price as Tundra halo trim (69K). With that said, I will take public transportation for another year until price become reasonable again---even if it means walking knee deep in ice for 3 miles daily until I reach the train station.

New here and this post is old but have a 2020 with 135K and I’ve never had a single issue, had a 2016 prior and put 120K~ on her without an issue and a 2007 with 300K~ also without issue. My 2020 gives a terrible ride, is loud, and the transmission operates like it’s constantly just had the worst hangover every day but the thing is goddamn bullet proof lol
