20mm bike rack question

So my bikes have 20mm axles. As a rule, that is all I ride, XC on up to DH, so the options here are for 20mm axles, I do not need to fit multiple fork mount bikes often enough to worry about it - My wife has a Q/R, but doesnt go riding all that often anyways...

I work in a decent area, but I am not able to see my truck/bike while inside, and I work 10 hour days. I need this to be secure enough to leave $4k outside and trust it will be there when I get back.

So in my F150 I had a PVC (utah MTB) rack. When riding after work I would take the front wheel off and put the whole bike in the cab, and then take it home in the bed.

This truck does not allow me that luxury, so I need a different solution.

Right now the best option I have is to build another PVC rack for this truck, and use a cable lock to secure the bike.

I do not want to use a Hurricane Fork Up 20mm adapter, though I do have one, and may have to resort to that for longer trips to keep bed space.

I am also considering a Kuat NV hitch rack, but would prefer to keep it in the bed, tailgate down.

Anyone have any solutions?

 

I tie-down my bike in the bed upright similar to how you'd tie a motorbike. If leaving it unattended, I have a cable lock I loop through a D-ring.

On the car, I have Yakima racks (King Cobra) that you don't remove your wheels + it has a lock & key as well.

 

You can buy the fork mounts for the bed rail. There are locking options, can't remember who makes them. Also keeps the bike nice and firm for transport.

 

I have thought about this, but I like having a bit of support keeping the bike up, rather than compressing the suspension to keep tension on the straps.

I wont be doing King Cobra (or the Thule equivalent), as I dont see the point of doing a rack when I have the bed - and if I do, it will probably be the Kuat NV hitch rack.

I guess I should add - this is not my first foray into transporting bikes - Have done so on a Jeep Cherokee (roof rack with Rocky Mounts) BMW 530 (roof rack with Thule trays) Ford F150 (PVC bike rack from Utah MTB design) Mazda Protege 5 (front wheel off, fits in the hatch) and a couple others. I know what is available for traditional carry methods, and very familiar with fork mount trays for Q/R and 9mm (and wheels on), as well as the Fork Up adapters for other methods. I was looking for another safe alternative.

With that said, I am in the process of making a new PVC rack for this truck that will attach to the bed rails to keep it in place. I should have it done and test fit completed this evening, and will update this thread, and post it over in the 2nd gen area for others with this dilemma. Also will have dimensions.
