My two cents... unless, I am running fairly flat, highways above 65 mph (rare for my driving) I keep the transmission in S5 and the ECT button is always on. I.M.O. in hilly/mountain driving running in S5 and a few hundred r.p.m.'s higher is better for mileage & driving experience than letting the engine dog down while pushing the skinny pedal down further and further trying to maintain speed. The m.p.g. results speak for themselves.

This thread title should probably be: If you're getting 25 mpg then you're hyper-miling and not driving in the mountains. :D

Hyper-miling on Saturday up I-81 in Va for 100 miles I was able to eeek out 27 mpg. I didn't make any friends going ~62 mph for 100 miles and accelerating like a snail but am very pleased that with 95k miles on the odometer I can still stretch the miles when needed. My truck is V6 with 265/75s, carries ~150 lbs in armor, 100 lbs in gear, 200 lb driver and a leer cap. Trip was from Raphine to Front Royal.

The truck must love the heat and summer fuel as this is a full mpg better than a previous run.

I will, from time to time when I feel like saving gas, shamelessly do 55 on a 65mph freeway, and 40-45 up long steep grades. Only with 2 or more lanes in the direction of travel, of course. The left / passing lane is there for a reason, let people use it.

At least you're doing it in the correct lane. Unfortunately, I find most people who are driving under the speed limit are hanging out in the passing lane.
