same, same. Sold my 3rd gen and got the OR premium. I needed more room in the back seat for my growing kids. BTW what size tires are you using?

I put 1000s of miles on a family member's 2016 SR5 4Runner, and watched it hit 206k miles before getting traded without one single issue (besides the airbag recall across all manufacturers). Both are good but outdated vehicles with their own pros and cons. In my opinion the T4R is a much more refined vehicle in nearly every way, especially in ride and the interior.

The 4th gen Tacoma will potentially smoke them both though

Well as real world owner of both I disagree with your opinion that you came up with after the so called tire kicking adventure you did at the dealer! My 2023 tacoma is not put together as well as my Japan built 4R. That's not my opinion my friend its a fact that after owning the 4R for 6yrs, and now on my 2nd 3rd gen taco. It's all good! I will also say that I enjoy driving my MT taco more then the 4R. When I have to go out for short erand run, etc the keys I reach for are always the tacoma. I love both, and are both great vehicles, but to compare the two on a equal plane(build quality) is just not true no matter how you try to rationalize it.

My point was that I preferred the 3rd gen so do you. Arguing that the 4R is superior at that point seems superfluous since you make your choice with whatever keys you pick up.
No 4R in the future for me.

My preference is 3rd Gen T4R. Unfortunately they're mostly destroyed now so I need to get something made less than 20 years ago.

Yep that's a different type of experience all together. Those are now "classic" cars IMO. Anything pre 2000 is nearly 25 model years old or older...which is crazy... To me I think 25 years ago an I think 1976... but it is 2001!

No, I hardly see them on any of the Dealer lots close by me. When I do see a 4R in stock it is usually the loaded version which is beyond what I am willing to spend. There is a Toyota online buying service, name escapes me. Doe anyone know that source. I'd like to quote out a 4R and shop around for Toyota Dealers in San Diego or L.A.

"Dinosaur"? That's Ok, at age 70 so am I. Hell, I don't even care if I have manual window cranks if I can get what I want at a good deal. At my age, I'm beyond caring what anyone thinks.

In my college town, I'd say women to men driving 4r's is 7 to 3 based on years of observation.

Hmmm.... rumors that 4 runner is done get traction after seeing this reveal? Land Cruiser more 4R size and price - Toyota dropping elitist pricing for entry model of Land Cruiser....

I came from a 4th gen t4r to my 2020 OR and I really like it. I have also driven a 2021 t4r many times and I have to admit the only advantage the taco has is gas mileage and an open bed to haul bulkier things. The 4runner is better in every way IMO and I would have bought one, but the price difference kept me from doing so and I wanted to try a truck again.

We have both in my family. I drive the tacoma and the wife drives the 4runner. Both are OR 2020s with almost same upgraded suspension and tires(33s E rated). Slight different skids and sliders etc. but almost the same. I love my LB Tacoma but the 4runner is so much better for the family trips and general build. If I had to pick the best one overall I would lean toward the 4Runner. Again, this is coming from someone who plans on keeping his Tacoma for a very long time.

Didn’t read all of this but I’ve owned multiple 4Runners and multiple Tacomas

the 4Runner is obviously all built in Japan, they have a fully boxed frame the Tacoma has a c channel frame, my biggest annoyance is how they lie to your face and basically call you a fucking moron by telling you your c channel frame is that way for flexibility off road no it’s because they use cheap shit metal and they rust
Think about it the hilux and Land Cruiser the two toughest Toyota vehicles do they have c channel nope fully boxed frame

4Runner has a shorter wheel base so much better for off roading (approach departure blah blah)
The 4.0 1gr is better than the 3.5 as far as reliability the 4.0 has almost zero issues I honestly can’t think of one at the top of my head I know the 2gr has some issues with leaks and coolant bypass pipes anyway the 4.0 is an absolutely easy 300k motor with tons of examples
If you get the trd off road or pro in the 4Runner you get the lever for your transfer case much more reliable than the dial you twist on the Tacoma.
Back seats actually exists on a 4Runner on the taco they’re pretty much truly almost worthless

These are all facts not opinions and the 3rd gen Tacoma is a decent truck when I had mine I had 60k trouble free miles they’re apples to oranges. I’ll even say the Tacoma is a good truck but the 4Runner is superior built

Not sure what’s so “superior built” on it once you drive a vehicle that’s actually built better. It’s a nice old Toyota but that’s all I can say for the 4R. Pro to pro they are not worthy of an extra penny over the taco. And the 4.0 is just as bad of an engine as the 3.5. No free lunch here either.

Sure maybe you want that magical reliability but you’re still stuck in an incredibly boring vehicle for 300k miles… who cares if you don’t need any work. It’s boring af
