Had this ‘99 1st Gen since 2002, bought with 70K on the clock, ran it up to 435K and the engine finally gave up the ghost, after many delays putting in a new engine in, 5 months to be exact. It is back in the driveway. Over the years I have practically rebuilt the whole thing. While the paint is shot, it is fairly new underneath…so should be good for another 24 years and 435K miles. Since my wife is now mainly driving it, she only drives roughly 3000/year, doubtful it will reach those many miles in so many years.

    That's awesome!

What engine does it have, 2.7 or 3.4? Did you do a local rebuild for the engine or boutique rebuilder? Or JDM/junkyard used?

    Thanks!

Has the 3.4, had the dealer do it from an engine supplier. While a bit on the spendy side, wanted a warranty. Figured cry once. I was going to do a JDM and do it myself, but don’t have the time.

Checked a couple private shops to do it, they weren’t any cheaper than the dealer. We might be moving in 5 years, so if there is warranty work any dealer can handle it wherever we move to.

She was trying to decide to either buy a new RAV4 or keep the truck, she decided to keep the Tacoma, as she is like me and doesn’t really care for cars. Plus I usually need rescuing from the back country at least twice a year, the Taco is much better for that. Ha!

The paint isn't shot, that's the early stages of patina. Embrace it!

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Love these. So many of my buddies had this exact truck in college. Some of the best ones built.

Yeah they are! As long that you don’t live in the rust belt, can keep these trucks running for a long time.
