    $VTI
    So that target IRA fund divests from stocks and moves to "safer" bonds etc as it approaches your retirement age...as long as you "do that yourself" you don't need a target age fund

    If I already bought some of the target fund, can I also buy $VTI and have my Roth be 50/50 of vti and the target fund? Or is it advisable to have just one for a Roth?

    Okay I wasn’t sure if I’d be penalized or anything since the target fund is a mutual fund and VTI is an ETF.

    Edit: looks like i can sell the target fund and then buy $VTI and just max out my roth ira every year and throw it into vti until i'm comfortable and learn more.
