Today i decided to take a gander under the hood to check the oil level and discovered an "Airaid" intake thing

    http://yourautoworld.com/images/AutoParts/2005-2009-toyota-tacoma-cold-air-intake-airai.jpg

I guess the previous owner didn't want to change air filters....I wonder what I would have done had I opened the hood at the dealership and seen that thing.

I called my neighbor over 35 year ASE mechanic for dealerships and ask him WTF it was for. He said it's for someone who doesn't like to change air filters, otherwise it has no effect on anything. SO I guess no air filters for me....

don't you think it would of been beneficial to open the hood before you bought it as well?

You still have to clean it. Its not really that special...

I would be jumping for joy if he had a S/C in it though

Thats pretty much what my neighbor said. It is of no use really....The guy knows his shit. Spent many years under cars at a few dealerships. Seen it all. He is the one who told me they throw the warranty stuff to the new guys at a lower rate while the experienced techs do the paid work and oil changes. Its no more than a K & N filter type thing. Doesn't add any measurable HP

There is a sticker up on the hood for it and a "throttle body spacer" He had a good laugh. I didn't know what to think. I cannot imagine the previous owner trying make the truck a hot rod lol...

    from a vendor site:
20 HP more? LOL Right up there with a mini Super Charger...People will buy anything. Shit if I had the stock parts I'd sell it for $150 and use the money for something useful...

Of course they don;t claim That thing will do any of the above they say "feeding your engine more air" well yeah a supercharger would do that........I hardly think a more porous filter would have that much of an effect on airflow

I actually have an araid intake and I have noticed a difference in mpg anything that helps the engine breathe better can't hurt

Yeah ..I had my last car about 3 months before I opened the hood...I really don;t expect to see much opening the hood at a dealership..."YEP has an engine and WOW is it ever clean and shiny" I only opened it to check the oilk because the wife's RAV used 2 Qts in 5000 miles. I put nearly 1k on mine and thought I should check the oil. And I just had a wire run from the battery to the rear for the Basslink Sub and wanted to put a fuse in it.

In this case because the truck was so clean and adult owned I did not expect any aftermarket "performance" parts under the hood.. If it had a Super charger I would have definitely passed. A K&N filter type is a good thing I guess. I put an air kit on on my bike but added pipes and an open loop EFI computer to make it all work together. In this case, it's just a very expensive air filter.

Cold air intakes do give better fuel economy and power gains.

Maybe so but this is not a cold air intake....LOL Yeah its SOLD as one I think but I was told it's a gimmick that has become popular in the past few years due to fuel prices. My neighbor has a new Tacoma and has done all the all the maintenance on the RAV for us. He is retired a few years and does work on the side. He has sockets almost as big as my wheels LOL

Nice having a guy next door with any possible tool I could need even though i would not know what to do with 99% of them.
