    When chains were stock for tailgates, they often came with a rubber tube cover so they didn't scratch and clang. Check out vintage truck parts. They also had a "J" hook on one end that allowed for the in between adjustments.

    same size as the chain links. 1/4”
    I think you need bed bolt tie downs for this to work effectively.

    This thread was very helpful. I ended up making these which are very similar but smaller diameter chain and S hooks instead of carabiners. Big hook points out away from truck, two clicks and it’s set

    Just be careful if you hit a speed bump or something. Your tailgate can easily bounce upwards and the hooks could fall loose. Obviously not an issue if you have a load strapped down that holds your tailgate from bouncing. :thumbsup:
