I’m currently on the freeway shoulder. Dealer changed my fuel pump this week without my authorization - for the recall - Got the truck back and it stunk of gas in the cabin. Now, 6 days later I’m driving at 75 mph and the truck started shaking and getting grumpy. I lost speed and power, pulled over immediately. Shut it off.

    Is this all a coincidence?

Truck had NO issues with the original pump before the recall.

    Year of truck?

Still in Toyota care or have AAA?

Have it towed to the dealer.

I don’t believe I coincidences, but then again what the hell do I know. Have it towed to the dealer and have them check it out.

The funny thing is on my way to drop it off for brake pads and resurfacing - I was going to top it off so they couldn’t wrench on the fuel pump and do the recall. MFer. I should have. I know the dealers get that sweet MFG cash which is why they do the recalls without telling you or asking for permission.

Is that official Toyota policy, doing recalls without telling you/us? Did they tell you after the fact, or did you just see it the receipt when you got home?

Why would you want to keep driving with a component that can leave you stranded, likely on a cold rainy holiday night far from home?

Yet you take it to a dealer for simple brake work? :notsure:

It was on the repair bill when I picked it up. They never asked or inquired. They just did it. Honda did the same thing to me one time and it made
me late for an appt. I told them you need to ask I can’t wait around. You’d think good customer service would be to ask or tell you.

Irony alert: I’m broken down with a new fuel pump. And 90,000 mi on the original with zero breakdowns.

Do you work for a dealer?

    I don't work at all. :p

I'm not defending the dealer. It's certainly possible the work done is related.

My 'irony alert' is that one uses a dealer for simple brake work, (as opposed to a quality independent or DIY) yet you don't want them to perform a recall that is operationally significant. And free.

If your complaint is that they should have asked in advance, maybe I can see that, if it was going to increase your time there. If it was done simultaneously with the brake work (2 mechanics), meh, no big.

Oh well, don't blame you for being grumpy. I'll go now.

But please do post back the root cause and the solution applied so we can all learn a bit. :hattip:

If you read my previous threads - I contacted all the highly regarded shops in my area to do the brakes. Nobody 1. Answered my requests for service or if they did 2. They wanted to replace the rotors which the dealer said were fine at my last scheduled maintenance. And why not have OEM parts for a $199 brake job when the first set lasted 90,000
    miles?

Furthermore - Why replace something if it’s not causing an issue? I never had an issue with the recall being free or considering doing it. But I think it’s hilarious that you said replacing it was the best way to avoid being stranded. Here I am new fuel pump and all baking in 98 degree sun by what appears to be fuel pump related. I guess the recall was a smashing success.

Furthermore it’s my truck. It isn’t property of the dealer or Toyota. Get consent. It’s not f—ing hard.

Absolutely, in regards to the good costumer service, and I’m sorry about that BS and hope you find a solution to your problem.

not really. most warranty work barely covers the techs time, and it's usually at a reduced rate, which irritates management. few techs are excited to receive a mechanical recall ticket. software recalls on the other hand...

john deere and tesla say otherwise. you made a licensing agreement, you don't 'own' it.

It may be your truck, but the NHTSA has told Toyota they're legally and financially responsible for the fuel pump issue

This is the world we live in with regards to huge corporations and mass produced vehicles
