Hi Everyone! New to our Taco family & forums. I looked around & found two threads with similar issues but no resolution.

First thing, mods: front cam install & smart cap with break light wiring.

I’m giving a complete rundown of events: Shortly after we purchased the vehicle the check engine light came on & took it to dealer under warranty & they said charcoal canister needed to be replaced. Two days after picking it up the check engine light came back on. Took it back in & dealer said they failed to put the hose clamp on the canister.

Two weeks later the car had been sitting for a few days, went to start it up & it would not start. I called the dealer, made an appointment, tried the car again & it started. So I canceled the appointment chalking it up to something weird. The next morning the same series of events occurred but this time I took the truck to the dealer. The dealer reported a bad battery & replaced the battery but lost the keys to the car. They did rekey it & gave us new fobs. Saying that everything was A-okay. Four days later, the same thing happened again but this time the car wouldn’t start at all & had to be towed to the dealer. The tow truck driver went through all the series of events from trying to jump the battery to getting to start it himself & even showing him that the truck would start with the remote start. Everyone is dumbfounded! when the tow driver gets to the dealership, the truck started. The dealer called back & said everything was operating as expected. I asked that they keep it another day & see if it starts in the morning. They call back the next day & everything was a-okay & come back for our truck.

Further items to note: we’ve only worked with the dealer because the truck is under warranty. Coincidentally the first time this happened was after we put on the smartcap. We did disconnect the harness to the shell light & it didn’t change anything.
All fuses have been checked under the hood & in the cab.

After three weeks of daily starts including a gap of four days when it sat we found ourselves stranded in the forest, unable to start the truck except for remote ignition, what a tease. Two hours after many attempts, it did start.

FYI, remote ignition turns the truck off when you open the door. Again, what a tease.
We’ve attached a video of this exact situation for your review.
Thank you all very much for any input you may have to resolve this. Our confidence in our Taco has been shook.

Did you install the front camera yourself, or is it a part of the 360 camera system?

    To clarify a few items:
You bought a used 21, how many previous owners? CPO? (if more than 1 I'd be suspicious of an ongoing problem)
Was the front camera already installed or did you add it? (thinking something is not fully connected in the dash or damaged from the cable running)

When you say wouldn’t start, did the engine turn over with the starter, and not actually fire, or no engine turn over at all?
Did you by chance hold the fob directly up to the “start” button?

I'm not able to understand your post.
"we found ourselves stranded in the forest, unable to start the truck except for remote ignition, what a tease. Two hours after many attempts, it did start."
So did it start every time with "remote ignition?" Do you mean using the fob?
Do you mean after trying to start with button on dash it would only work after trying for 2 hours?
Why were you "stranded in the forest" if you could start with "remote ignition"?

"We’ve attached a video of this exact situation for your review."
    I don't see a "video".

It had one previous owner, was a 24 month lease previously. There wasn't. list of service calls through the warranty with Toyota or reported on CarFax. Yes, installed the front camera "Anytime"myself. I'm pretty good however I won't discount a mistake on my part, that's always a possibility. However the issue didn't arise for approx a month after install. I'm all ears, really appreciate the reply.

No, the engine would not turn over, not firing, not a peep. No, we read about holding the fob to the "start" button afterwards however we'll try that if/when we have to. The fobs are brand new, literally, due to the dealer losing then replacing both fobs however I'm also running on the assumption that the "new fob" had a good battery in it.

Thank you for your reply and requested clarification! you all rock.
YES - it started every time with the remote start.
YES - after 2 hours of fussing about, checking fuses, attempted battery jump (from a friend we were able to track down) it randomly fired up.
Remote Ignition: for safety reasons, when the truck is "remote started", once you open the door to drive off the vehicle turns off, so that someone can't steel it etc. So even though we could start it remotely, we were unable to start with the push button inside the vehicle.
Video: I'll attempt another upload, it really does illustrate all of this really well.

Thank you in advance for your time!

My friend, I can't argue with anything above with the exception of, it wasn't a fuel pump recall. it' wasn't without permission. Due to a check engine light and failure of a charcoal canister it went in, was repaired, no issue. Service guys are great. Techs, well, they didn't put on the hose clamp, light came back on, lost another day taking it in due to poor workmanship.

Now you say polite, respectful etc. I must say, I'm really great with people. Further more I don't feel that anything above points at any "anger". I always give benefit of a doubt.

So all in all, I appreciate your reply and comment however I must point out it's off topic and not on point for this situation. Yes, the service folks in the dealer are not to blame and they do provide good POS service however they are not mechs or techs and you never get to talk the folks actually working on your vehicle. Thanks again, for real.

Any chance they reprogrammed used fobs? Just remembering my trip to get one of cars serviced at BMW. Lady walks in and says she left other keys in the loaner and a garage door opener. Service person walks out with a 5 gallon bucket full of keys and garage door openers. I had to laugh.

I'm sure there is always a chance of that. However, it did happen with the original fob too, they lost the fob/key when I took it in for this original issue. it could always be part of the issue but idk

I wondering if it has something to do with their reprogramming.

Thank you for your reply. it did start prior to the lost fob (dealership mistake) so I doubt it however I'm not ruling anything out. thanks again

If the fobs are ok the only other things could be brake pedal sensor or push to start button/sensor. Id start mashing that brake pedal when it acts up and see if that's why it's intermittent.
