P0705 Code: Replaced Neutral Switch and Amplifier - Issue Still

Update: FINALLY got the issue fixed. We replaced the neutral safety switch and replaced the immobilizer and that didn't fix it. We ended up having to replace the main engine wiring harness and that did the trick. My husband was able to unbypass the starter relay (because the error caused it not to start), and it works like a champ.

My 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD V6 4.0L just had the neutral switch replaced. It starts fine in Park, goes into reverse just fine. However, going into Drive (D4) it jerks forward into gear after a second, or I can go down to 2nd gear first then back up to 4th. Does anyone have this issue or had this issue? I've seen posts of people having the issue where it jerks into park or reverse once replacing it. I don't have that issue at all. Just going into Drive. Once it's in Drive it's fine. It is still throwing up a code for the Neutral Safety Switch though even after clearing it.

It started struggling to start where you would move the key to the on position and the dash would light up then shut off. Then my husband got it very temporarily where you put it into neutral then it'd start. While having the issue with switching to the on position, we plugged in to check for codes and it threw up the neutral safety switch code and the amplifier assembly code. Replaced both. And it started turning on again, but just doesn't go into drive smoothly.

 

Ok..so was it doing this before you replaced the parts?

 

Yeah. It's the first problem I've had with her. Once we replaced the amplifier and neutral safety switch. It turns right on while in park. Goes into reverse flawlessly. Have to wait a second for it to jerk into Drive.

 

So are you sure its adjusted correctly?...does it show what gear its in on the dash?

 

Yeah, it shows it's in drive, but I have to wait for it to shift (jerks forward) into Drive.

 

How many miles is on it...maybe @gearcruncher will chime in soon

 

Just shy of 170,000 (specifically 169,979)

 

Has the transmission fluid level & condition been checked?

 

The transmission may still be starting off in limp mode if the code is still popping up .

My 05 was like this, may be a faulty replacement neutral switch

I had issues like yours and thought the trans was going out, replaced it (dealer and oem part) and haven’t had an issue since and with over 90k miles since

 

Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but my husband says no power on pin one on the starter relay. "No crank, no start" He has it bypassed so it starts with the key.

 

We're going to try replacing the neutral safety switch with an OE part from Toyota instead. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Hey did you ever get this resolved?

I just replaced my NSS on my 2006 TRD. Had all the typical symptoms; no drive/reverse dash indicator, no reverse lights, no cruise control, rough shifting, rough into reverse, rough into park. I bought a $40 switch on Amazon. Replacing it was an awful job. Had to cut it off with a Dremel and a chisel. Shifts smooth now but the linkage is a bit sloppy. It wasn't before so I'm guessing I stretched the cable or damaged a bushing when trying to crank the nut off the indicator shaft.

 

Sorry, I just saw this. It is not fixed yet. It's still throwing a P0705 code, and we still have the relay bypassed so I can start the truck, and it also still jerks into gear (not when going into reverse or neutral only when going into the drive gears). My husband replaced NSS twice once with a non-OEM and with an OEM. Didn't fix it. Replaced the amplifier (that was another error that it had been throwing up). Once he replaced the amplifier that error went away but we're still getting the P0705 code. I'm about to drive it off a cliff.

 

Did you look into that service bulletin I linked to in post 15 . These early 2nd gen Tacomas were well known for the issue
