Valve cover leaks are common. Sludge isn’t a huge issue unless neglected.

And when you've had even more than enough of those V8s your ears subconsciously perk up when they hear that balancer on someone else's rig at a red light lol

Those rocks were all smoothed out due to the water out there

I'm talking consistently dry areas with sharp rocks

Think So Cal for instance, a lot of areas out there stay dry AF

I'd hate to lose a tire on the trail and not have a spare

You got a full size spare?

It’s some 32” all terrain. I think it’s a bit wider than my tires and probably not quite the same height, but it would work in a pinch to get me home.

    You're not full-time 4WD; you'll be good

I'd just make sure it isn't old and dry rotted

    @Abeyancer

With the exception of GM motors, do you have any experience with any motors having crappy OEM harmonic balancers?

I've experienced and witnessed it on multiple LS engines; never on an LT engine though

And not on my old LS3 but that had 67k miles only

It must be very rare on Toyota engines. Their rubber is some of the highest quality around. I’ve only seen one case in a 1FZ.

That sounds similar to a 5VZ. Apparently after 8/96 they made the oil passages smaller for emissions reasons, which may have made them less resistant to sludging, but I’m not sure on that. My 96 Camry with the 5S was rock-solid. Those will still run mint even after unthinkable abuse.

No, I'm talking common as in, expected

It's an issue with many LS variants, knowing @Abeyancer and his wealth of random knowledge he'd probably chime in on something else he's familiar with

My results are probably skewed since I did unlicensed auto repairs outta my van for awhile. Almost allof my customers were waitresses or bartenders (and other bar patrons lol) that couldn't afford real shop rates so their cars were usually way more beat to shit than avg.

That being said, the GM3.3 and GM3.8 stand out in my memory as regularly bad, or ones that were clapped out by 200k

Ha so GM in general just couldn't get it right

Dayco makes a cheap and better replacement than an OEM variant, at least that was the common go to for replacement

LOL I had a dayco one on my parts shelf cause it happened often enough for me (3 separate cars in a 5month period) but yes, in my, very limited, small sample size, work experience, GM engines require the most maintenance. But the only German cars I worked on were VW so it's possible the other guys were worse.

At least as far as needing parts... I'd much rather work on a GM engine than a VW engine

My buddy hasn’t changed the oil on his clunker in 3 years 25k miles. He’s got a spare motor for it, so at 310k miles he’s waiting for it to die. Lol the MZ is stout. Just dated like the VZ
