Overland set-up total vehicle weight...

Here is my question - I'm wanting to do an Overland setup and I started to add up the weight of the equipment/mods that I'm wanting to get and it gets rather high. I see trucks with very similar setup and I'm curious on what their vehicle equipment/mods add up to.
My vehicle will also double as my daily driver.

Mods already bought: RCI skid plates (engine, transmission, transfer-case, cata guards, fuel tank, and differential) and Rock Sliders ..........307 lbs

Soon to buy: RSI Smartcap - 212, iKamper Skycamp 3.0 mini - 125, Taruca USA awning - 62, Prinsu roof rack - 45, CBI Baja front bumper (alum) - 55, CBI high clearance duel swing rear bumper - 200

*** items may change as I get closer to buying them but I'm sure the weights will be similar.

Add a full tank of gas plus 10 extra gallons - approx 194, 10 gallons of water - 83.

So, without even adding my weight, my dog, supplies, etc I've reached a wight of almost 1,100 pounds. Toyota Tacoma payload weight is 1,155.

What is being done to increase the payload limit? I'm sure an upgraded suspension (upgrade is planned) helps but is that enough? Am I over thinking this? What am I missing?

Most people ignore the payload and slap on as much machined pig-iron as their credit cards will allow.

It's really all up to your ultimate goal. Are you trying to look cool, or do you have an actual purpose in mind? If so, rethink what you really need.

Weight doesn't just affect payload. It also affects capability, milage, wear and tear, safety, and the occasional ability to use the truck for non-overland truck things.

I'm probably the very opposite of a minimalist, but the trucks I see today make even me say "damn dude, dial it back a notch."

 

Mr Lobster is correct, and in the US there isn't much care/enforcement for passenger vehicle GVWR.

But it is worth the thought exercise of what do really need vs. want.

 

You can not increase payload all you can do is beef up your suspension to handle better. Sometimes you can get into trouble at a DOT check if they decide to weigh you or if you get into a serious enough accident where there is a big investigation. If you want a better idea of how much stuff you can haul go weigh your truck with you and your dog with a full tank of fuel then look at your door jamb,it will tell you your GVW.

 

Payload is a function of vehicle frame, suspension components, body mounts, etc.

If you're loading your truck up so much you're exceeding your payload weight, you better hope there's some other upgrades in their too. Suspension, suspension mounts, upgraded shackles and hangers, etc all contribute to "increasing" your payload weight but ultimately you're still wearing the vehicle faster than it was intended.

Consider what you actually need and if you need steel skids vs aluminium, etc.

 

You cannot increase payload. It is what it is and Toyota engineering decides what it is. Can it haul more? sure. Legally? Nope.

 

I would start out with the two items below, and a full tank of gas. Won’t be long, you will realize you really don’t need to spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of extra pounds in cool kid bolt on gear to “overland”.

 

Overlanding weight management 101....buy 14" lodge cast iron pan, hit yourself with it and rethink how necessary heavy things are.

 

I’m currently carrying about 650# of constant weight, no issues whatsoever. When I go on trips, I’m over payload, truck drives/brakes just fine.

Saw a tacomer bro recently with like a ton of “overlanding” bullshit slapped on, not a single spec of dirt and my favourite he had his extra bright yellow fogs on. It was a beautiful sunny day…

So I’m curious. Since when camping/off roading/wheeling became “over landing”?

If you call it overlanding instead of camping you can charge double for the same shit you buy for camping at half the price. Same theory as Starbucks calling a large coffee a venti and adding $2 to the price.
