I've read here and other sources (including Bilstein) that the 5100s are designed for OEM factory coils, but it's common to see folks pair them with Old Man Emu coils for lift which numerous online retailers offer assembled. I've read that this pairing will sag over time.

Has anyone had first hand experience with the Bilstein 5100/OME combo sagging?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

3+ years on 5100 and 885 coils. No sagging here. Also I have 885X model of these coils.

This isn't a 3rd Gen specific question so I'll provide a non 3rd Gen specific answer.

5100s and OME combinations are so widely used (and recommended) because they're cheap, and they work well together.

With that said, there have been reports of individuals reporting less height after some time/mileage. This is normal as coils take time to settle.

Upon initial installation, a setup meant for 2" of lift may yield 2 1/2" or a hair more, only to settle to 2" after some few months and several thousand miles; this would explain the "sagging" shortly after.

Same with leaf packs; ever install a new leaf pack only to get stinkbug? It happens.

Thanks all! Other spring rates, what is the difference between Old Man Emu Coils and OEM coils? I am just trying to understand why Bilstein says not to use their 5100 shocks with anything other than OEM, when so many folks pair them with Old Man Emu without any reported problems.

Definitely agree on the cover their ass part, but I'd add that it wouldn't be Bilstein's responsibility to test each and every other coil available for vehicles as the research and development is done on a stock vehicle.

The easiest thing to do is use a stock coil, with their shock, and give you the specs on it in relation to lift over stock height achieved. Different spring rates as well as lengths add a whole ton of other variables which is where a vendor comes in. You should just call one of them or look for one of the many reputable ones on here really.

That or a simple search yields much of the compiled information to help others having the same question.

I put OME 885's with 5100's on about 6 months ago, they settled after a few months from the initial 1.25 inch lift to a 1.125 inch lift. I only wanted a 1 inch lift so I used the lowest setting on the 5100's. I love these shocks compared to stock, but I feel the OME springs are a bit stiff and need a bit of weight added to the front to get them where they need to be.

OEM stock coil is short, therefore you can set it on all settings. widely used OME 885, 887 are longer and recommended to be installed on 0 setting. However, some folks bumped them to next setting to mitigate sagging.
ARB advertised OME coils to be used with their nitrocharged shocks and use a different coil for added front weigh.
887 for stock, 888-medium load, etc.
885 coil is for 2nd gen tacomas with stock front weight. Advertised as 1.75" lift. This is the exact lift I got on my 3rd gen SR5.
There is one person here who runs ome 887 with ome shocks. His suspention droop is the same as mine on 5100 w/885 coil

Yep. Running 2887 springs with nitro charger shocks. Settled at 1.75” after ~ 2 years and adding front aluminum stump bumper, TRD skid, winch and steel sliders.

With sway bar removed it rides quite nice, I’m a happy camper.
