Kinda confused on how Tacoma stock suspension works. I've read some stuff that suggests the access cab has a 1" lift up front higher than most, so when purchasing lifts this needs to be subtracted (aka 2" lift is really 1)

How did they accomplish this lift on access cabs? Did they pre load the stock shocks? Spacer? Did they bring the back up or are access cabs leveled from the factory?

Also curious about how the lift / springs are adjusted to accommodate a 2.7 vs 3.5, or did they just use one set across both, making 4 bangers stiffer up front?

Thanks for your time, trying to plan suspension upgrades is hard without understanding these and I can't find much via the search tool. Any info appreciated

I'd say less weight on the access cab over the double cab with the same suspension = slightly higher ground clearance on the AC over the DC.

Tell us what you have and what you want to accomplish and there will be lots of options. There's no reason to fret over every configuration.

Well over 90% of lifts are only for looks. Which is fine. But these trucks are quite capable out of the box. And with a tire quality upgrade, do more than most drivers are aware.

So knowing why you want to lift and how you will actually use the truck and your budget will help you get better answers.

Or just call @memario1214 at @Hotshot off-road. But he's gonna ask the same questions.

Where did you read about this?

Double cab models are about 100lbs heavier than access cab (i.e. the difference is less than the weight of a single passenger). Same springs/coilovers will see a fractional height difference (like 0.2") on the two cab configs.

I've never heard that, or noticed them any higher. Is it true?

I've read it on this forum and a few other places, but here is a notable example on a set of dobinsons

I've got an access cab 2.7 with an auto 3rd gen. My goal is a slightly better aesthetic (I was thinking about an inch up front) without hurting the suspension travel too much, as on IFS with a lift you are trade up travel for down when you lift. Plus I want to run skinny 32s and actually articulate them without rubbing, and more lift is going to make that more difficult.

I also lastly need to get a ome Dakar or equivalent leaf pack in the back, I have a fiberglass shell w/ toolbox sides that stay filled, additional 150+ pounds in bed that stays put, etc.

Oh and lastly I need to get the vehicle fully armored. Going to be lightweight everything so maybe 150 pounds on the bumper and an aluminum skids / steel sliders. Rear bumper I have planned is like 20 lbs more than stock so neglible. But yeah, quite a bit of weight and not sure if I need stiff springs because the engine is lighter than a v6. Just kinda confused about how it all should play out to get the best performance off-road

Interesting but kind of irrelevant, maybe the weight is made up from accessory systems to the V6? The 4cyl has a higher payload rating, it is undeniably lighter

^Yeah not sure what accounts for the ~160lb weight difference between I4 and V6 according to the 2023 press kit. The V6 has the tow pkg standard, but the hitch is only about 70lb.

(The same press kit says access cab is the same height as double cab, by the way.)
