Consolidated Super White 040 Paint Issue/Failure Thread - With Toyota Corp. Update

2017, 141k, Assebmled in San Antonio, No issues so far. Regular washing. The truck was paint sealed when new but I haven't re-sealed it so I'm guessing it's worn off now. Have noticed rock chips on the front end are very easy to get. The paint is super soft.

What is important about 3 or 5 vin number start?

 

3 is the trigger number to blame Mexicans

Well my Mom and Dad are from Dunedin and my Aunt and Uncle (and some cousins) live in Twizel......I grew up in Herbert where my dad ran the forest

 

Just trying to determine the variables or commonalities. Seems that most affected were unfortunately produced in one of the Mexican plants. Don’t know why the bonding failure has plagued the 3 vin’d plants. I would assume Toyota sources the 040 paint in bulk for most of their North American plants. Seems only a very small amount of 5 vin’d produced 040 have failed.

 

I have a good buddy "Max G." who has a great home overlooking the bay in Dunedin, his wife is "Chris". Max used to teach at the University of Dunedin. They built a "Kit House" in Twizel in a section where there are all kinds of custom built homes. Your Twizel family would probably know where that is. Within walking distance of the lake. There's a really cool campground where the locals have all kinds of permanent structures built. We visited Twizel and Dunedin just pre-covid and are planning on going back again soon. Twizel was a great little town, reminded me of the States back in the 60's. Even the cheapest beer at the market in Twizel was great! 2 of his kids live in Christchurch, the other is his daughter and family now in Florida on Special Assignment for the N.Z. Military (Son in Law) Daughter is a real "stud" herself. At least 1 tour in Afghanistan while she served in the N.Z. military. I was/am very impressed with the people we met in N.Z., they seem to have a good balance of life and work. I like that it's somewhat expected to go on a "walkabout".

 

I’m sure this has been discussed ad nauseam but I’m including some pictures of my current situation. I’ve made a claim with corporate and it’s at the dealer right now being evaluated. This will be the second time for evaluation and the first time Toyota pretty much blew it off. I know the history of the super white paint. This is damn near the most ridiculous paint peeling I’ve seen since Chevy had the same issue years ago. It literally flakes off when you touch it. There are some factors that I let Toyota know of concern was the thickness of the paint, and or the adhesion to the primer and or bad preparation.
I thought I’d put this up for that discussion if anyone has had the same or similar experiences were there paint that I could maybe help me and others down the road.

PS-Toyota says they will cover it because it was within the warranty time period. We’ll see how far that goes.

He guy looking at Tacomas. Found a made in Mexica Super White Tacoma. Should this be avoided? Are all super white years affected?

 

I’m having the same issue with my Tacoma and I only have 15,000 miles on mine. My husband called Toyota about it and they said we were the only ones that have made a complaint about this happening.

 

I wanted to post my paint failure on my 2018 Toyota Tacoma since Toyota said this wasn’t a problem. It started with a quarter size piece missing.

 

I have a 2017 Tacoma with only 70K miles.
The lining of the hood and three doors are chipping. The truck is incredibly well cared for and is pristine aside from the paint defect.
Toyota won't honor the defect... yet.

It says a class action began, how do we show support or get involved?

 

Did the response sound like it was being read off a cue card. Doesn't matter, it should be under warranty.

 

Mine the same but not as bad in this single area.
