Technically you are right, but by the class of vehicles that the marketing teams and manufactures you mentioned the 1/2 ton full-size truck market does not include the Tacoma, so, I stand by what I said about not having a whole lot of luxury or bells and whistles for 50K these days in the 1/2 ton (full size) truck market.

When 4th gen pricing comes out, you might not even be able to get a lot of bells and whistles for 50K in the mid size market, were the Tacoma resides...lol

And I'm not so sure about it being more comfy than a 70's or 80's 1/2 ton, those late 70's Ford F100's had a pretty comfy ride and I do like putting the windows down, and going for a cruise in an 80's square body chevy truck. I've had both, and I would own both again, just for a nice cruise around town.

The Tacoma is a fine truck for what it is and can do, it punches above its class, especially off road etc. But I'm not gonna go so far as to say it makes me excited to get in it and drive it more than a well restored 70's/80's 1/2 ton truck...

I figured as much. I was thinking toyota probably used "Genuine Leather, aka the lowest grade. I would've preferred softex. I don't really care for leather and mines already showing creases on the outside bolster from my fat ass shuffling across it trying to get out.

How is the rust situation with your 1st gen? I just changed the oil on my truck today and the rust is getting pretty bad. It’s 9 years old but looks 20. The frame was inspected and coated but is looking pretty bad now and all the small parts, clamps, hard lines, etc are really rusty. Under the hood too. I’m at 173K miles and was hoping to hit 200K but not sure if it will make it without starting to replace everything.

Beg to differ, need an all-in-one commuter, dirt bike hauler, and camp/travel vehicle, so I crossed shopped everything from Subarus to 1 tons, it is more like have $50K to spend how do I want to spend it? We don’t “need” anything. Have walked and bicycled to work, and slept on the ground without much more than an emergency blanket before. Though a 1 Ton with a slide-in camper is a hell of a lot more comfortable. Or however you want to spend it. Suby and a Roof Top Tent? Tacoma with a GFC? F150 and a Four Wheel Camper? 1 Ton with an Alaskan? Looked at Ford Transits too (didn’t really want to daily a van though) All will accomplish what I want them to do, just differently.

Spent most of its life in AZ, have been in Idaho for 9 years however they use more grit than salt/mag chloride. There is a little bit of rust here and there, do get under there once a year and hit the frame farm implement paint. While doesn’t look new, it still looks good considering it has 435K miles on it.

    As of today.

Is that the original frame? I think my frame is still eligible for replacement for three more years. At this point I’m hoping it gets rusty enough that it needs to be replaced. Then it will get all new brake lines and stuff. How crazy will it be if they have to replace the frame on a truck with 200K miles on it instead of just using some quality paint in the first place.

Why are you waiting , my understanding is they were replacing them with any rust on the frame

Yep original frame. Years ago they sent me a recall letter, took it in…said it was waaay too clean. Most of the fasteners still look good too. Since living here, do try and spray off any de-icer immediately after a storm blows through. We don’t get too much snow in valley, so not much of an issue like back East.

What TRD Thang said, wouldn’t wait on replacing. There was 2G in the shop getting its replaced when I was in there picking up my 1G after they put a fresh engine in it. Was trying to get it to 500K, but oh well.

It has to have perforations before they will replace it. It went in for inspection and to get sprayed with their secret goop a year or so ago.

Makes you appreciate rev-hang, that’s for certain. I have the photo from the scales for that trip somewhere. She was maxxed out for sure.

Headwind, 60-70 on flat interstate being mindful about choosing between 5th and 6th gear: 12-14 mpg

No wind, same conditions with a lot more time in 6th gear: 14-15 mpg

I’ll have her dressed up similarly next week.

No worries. I think you "@" me a while back and I don't think that gives a notification. The quotes I know for positive do. Just want to keep the conversation going, I like your input in this thread

I saw a few posts about the frame but what’s the wild speculation guess if it’s the same as the 3rd gen frame?
Just thinking and hoping my 3rd gen sliders will fit

or I’ll find a welder to help them fit. :welder:

Loaded to or above max, sure they’ll get down the road, just isn’t safe. Do plenty of white knuckle ass puckering stuff on the dirt bike, want relaxed with the tow rig. Have done maxed out short runs to the dump or towing loads of gravel, it isn’t fun, surely don’t want to do long trips like that.

My simple setup averages 18-20 mpg, no issues with getting down the road, pulling mountain passes, have plenty of power. Have an EZ-UP too that I use if the weather is foul. So plenty of room, actually more than a slide in camper, just isn’t convenient, but usually at one spot for a week, while we out riding trails on the bikes. Last trip my buddy brought his Class C RV, so that was nice, some of the best campers are someone else’s… :D
