The truck carrier broke down with my new Tacoma. Now what?

My dealer promised my new TRD Pro would be in 3 weeks ago. Then they told me the carrier semi had been abducted by an alien mothership. How long should I wait for the alient mothership to give my TRD Pro back?

 

OP is going to find out his Taco really got dumped elsewhere at another dealer and sold to someone else for $10K over what he was going to pay.

 

I'd really think about walking back in and asking for my money back in cash as it was given, and if refused then demanding.

The signing the papers and such then to be told "oh it's on the way" reeks IMO.

Good luck man. This sucks..I gotta think you can get another truck though and be free of this nonsense.

 

I think this is all very interesting but extremely unlikely. The hydraulic system is used to raise and lower the racks but once in position they are locked into place. You wouldn’t likely know it was damaged until you tried to operate it. This also means the trailer would not be immobilized by a problem with the lift. Another tractor would have been sent to pick it up and a tow truck for the damage tractor. Another thing is the DOT regulations are extremely strict for carriers. You can’t just leave a loaded car hauler on the side of the freeway for a week doesn’t work like that. I think most people here already know this but whatever is actually going on the story they are giving you is horseshit.

 

See if your state had lemon laws or something else that would allow you to “return” the vehicle you never got.

That will at least give you tremendous leverage, even if you don’t want to use it.

 

Lemon law? There is REAL law at hand here. There is no vehicle that was "purchased" as far as we can tell. But the whole story still seems fishy af.

That cash payment will get you a letter from Toyota that they are reporting the cash payment to the IRS. 10k & over triggers the letter. Ask me how I know.

 

Local Toyota Dealer (Escondido Toyota) sent me info for new 2023 Tacoma's in stock at 3.88% for 4 years. Too bad I'm not ready to pull the pin on a new truck purchase.

 

The $500 and $1000 bills were discontinued to stop the movement of millions of $$ easily. You cannot even "gift" a friend $16,001 without the IRS trying to interfere. Not that I have that problem but "good samaritan" gets spanked these days.

Totally agree. It sounds to me like something happened and the dealer is stalling for time. Having him sign the paperwork just makes it even harder for him to back out but that he actually did it without the truck there for inspection is nuts.

If this is real this is one of the oddest, strangest, funniest stories I've ever heard. Not even sure what adjective to give it.

 

Run away fast. Not joking ... RUN AWAY FAST! Tell the dealer to undo everything. If you have to wait months for another truck dealer with a non-confusing deal, better than the possible consequences here. Soon enough 4th gen ONLY as new will make everyone miserable.

I've been in logistics for 13 years..... I'm here to tell you drivers lie, lie, lie when they are running late or they mess something up.

It could be that the carrier over-committed capacity to Toyota, and are backlogged several orders, or forgot to grab OP's truck off the rail yard at the time of the original pickup. They'll eventually get it right, but its very unlikely they'll create a ripple effect of other missed orders just to get this original truck delivered. It will eventually deliver, when its convenient for the carrier only though.

All the dealership might be getting is "uhhhh... its broken down?" from the carrier. Someone mentioned Hanlon's Razor already......

 

Some things just become too much trouble and complicated. Some of my woodworking projects, as necessary as I might find them, are just too much trouble to "tweak/fix" and it is best to start over with a new unit that does not have the flaws being problematic. In such cases it is easier to step away.

The OP can hang tight if wanted.
