Made a 2hr trek up to Kalispell, MT Discount Tire to get a set of ultra terrains (265/75/16), since Missoula has yet to get a DT (talked to the guy at the register when I walked in and he said soon! :fingerscrossed:).

I was a little worried about some of the balancing / vibration issues noted in here and being located 2 hrs away from DT, I was a little hesitant. But I drove all the way home and everything was super smooth!

Coming from E-rated Nitto Ridge Grapplers, the first thing I noticed was the acceleration felt much better! Turning also took just a little bit of adjustment to get accustomed to. Additionally, I did also notice that I had to do more steering input / corrections while driving (highway), while not a bad or good thing it's something I noticed after driving for 30 minutes. Both probably attributed to tire weight differences, where the ultra terrains are ~10-13 lbs lighter than the E-rated Nitto RG.

Overall, very pleased with tires and how they handled on the drive home and the super quick service at DT in Kalispell (in and out in like 15-20 minutes!)! Look forward to putting these through hunting season and winter here in MT.

P.S - They do look better in person than in photos!

bout to make the switch from RG myself. i know new tires are always quieter than they can eventually get, but curious if you noticed them less than the RG as far as highway noise. Dont get me wrong, the RG were not MT tires by any means. I'm the guy that hits a dirt road, and one mud hole every other year. gotta different rig for the fun stuff :)

My RG were getting pretty loud before my switch, they were probably at 2-4mm. But I didn't really care about how loud they were, as I always blast my music when I'm driving lol. But the switch was noticeable before and after in road, but could simply be due to new tires vs really worn out tires.

@phatfisher thank you for your business! We appreciate your support. My wife and I just got back from Missoula from Arizona. What a beautiful place. I would like to forward your words of praise to the Kalispell location if you don't mind. The wheel and tire assembly looks great! Now that we have locations in Helena and Kalispell, Missoula would be next.

Been shopping for some Toyo Open Country AT3s, but stumbled actors these Ultraterrains, and I really like the look! Plus they’re a bit cheaper.

@Discount Tire , any way to get a quote for four in a 265/75r16 116s/SL to Columbia, SC?

I am planning putting big beefy 265/75 on my stock 16 wheelers.

Did you guys need to lift the truck? or its possible to put those beefy tires on 2023 SR5 ? Ones it came with look pretty sick but once they wear out I want to go 265

    I am looking at those 2 :

Had a set of ultra terrains installed on Saturday and still having some vibration. This was my third visit to DT. Originally ordered Baja boss AT since I’ll be moving in a couple of month to PNW and wanted something that was a little bit more mud worthy without going to MT tires. They couldn’t balance any of the Baja boss tires. Truck was shaking so bad I couldn’t keep up with the traffic, felt almost like it was death wobbling like an old TJ. Looked at the weights on the wheels and the tech had had put on so many weights on one wheel that she literally had to glue them in rows on top of each other. I wish I would have taken a picture of it since I would have had a good laugh if I saw it out in the wild, but I guess it’s not as funny on your own truck. Took it back to DT and had a different tech try and balance them. Ended up being that the balance machine was saying that two of the wheels needed between 40-60oz of weight to balance. I’m happy this tech didn’t go ahead with trying to glue rows of weights as well. He did his best to rebalance them and put the better balanced ones on the front to reduce shaking. Said the ones he installed on the rear were out of round and he will order two new ones and to see if the front still vibrates. The truck still had pretty bad vibration but it was significantly less and I could at least go down the highway. I ended up calling them and asking them to just change the tire brand altogether. I can understand one, maybe two tires having issues with balancing, but with all four I figured it may be the way they’re trying to balance them and they’re likely not going to be able to balance new ones either. Had ultra terrains installed and there is still some vibration, mostly in the seat than the steering now. I can live with it but it’s very frustrating since it’s noticeable. The wheels have had three attempts at balancing now so there are the white wheels weight glue pads all over them that I still need to remove. When I was looking at the weights I also noticed that at least two of the wheels are scratched/gouged on the inside. These were brought brand new to TD. Not sure how it happens but it almost looks like the tech tried using a screw driver to pry off the old weights when rebalancing. Another negative is that the Baja boss tires were $241/tire vs $199 for UTs. I didn’t realize that switching to theses wouldn’t get me back the difference even though I switched because they could not balance them, so I ended up overpaying for these. Have always taken all our family vehicles to DT for tires since all the reps there are super nice regardless of their position and never had an issue before, even with larger more aggressive muds on Jeeps. Just feels like I got really shafted this time around. If anyone knows any shops in northern Chicagoland or anywhere around Tacoma/kitsap county WA that can get these balanced right for me I would love to know.
Comparing Baja Boss AT to UTs in dry pavement only. Baja boss was definitely louder and got slightly worse mpg (2-3mpg) than UTs. I think with them the truck wasn’t struggling but you could notice it wanted to rev a little more to get yourself moving. No rubbing in 265/75/16 on a 23 TRD OR with 0 offset wheels. The tires felt more sure footed with needing less input. Sidewalls also seemed stiffer since I didn’t notice any sidewall flex when turning. UTs get maybe 1 mpg less than stock OR tires and the sound level is same as original tires. It seems like you can feel sidewalls flex in corners. UTs do rub with same specs as Baja Boss but this is probably easily solved with some very minor trimming. They look a bit less aggressive that Baja boss but they also seem larger at the same time even though they’re almost identical in size. Would go with Baja boss if you wanted more off-road performance and can find a shop that can balance them, UTs if you want more comfort and better gas mileage.

“Wrangler” is an entire product line from Goodyear. Many styles within that line, like the Ultraterrain, Duratrac, etc.

    Hi Friends -

I'm considering a set of Goodyear Ultraterrain ATs (265/75/16) as I'm trying to lessen tire weight, but gain as much sidewall as I can.

On my FJ40 and Westfalia I have KO2s that I'm very happy with, but looking at tire diameter and weight on the KO2 265/75/16s we yield 53lbs and 31.6" overall diameter while Goodyear Ultraterrain ATs (SL) boast 40lbs and 31.7" overall diameter.

My question, for the individuals who have tried both KO2s and Goodyear Ultraterrain ATs, in your experience, which tire had the better ride quality? On my FJ40 and Westfalia, changing to the KO2 tire was a night and day difference in ride quality. The KO2s are fantastic and provide a much better, less harsh, ride.

Can we say the same thing about the Goodyear Ultraterrain ATs?

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

    Best,
    Michael

I just had some put on today - 265/70/17. Love the way they look. So far the ride seems nice, but have only had them for a day. Having some rubbing issues, so will take off my front mud flaps to see if that solves it. (these are a size up from my stock 16 inch wheels)

All - I'm getting a set of Ultraterrains 265/75/16s put on this coming Tuesday. Would an alignment at that time be suggested? Thanks for any input.
