Official Crawlbox BS thread!

ended up not clocking it. I wanted to, but even at the next notch, it was very close to hitting the gas tank and the shifter piece on the factory case was hitting the trans tunnel which would have required cutting and welding, that I did not want to deal with. After getting it fully mounted up, the transmission cross member is still the lowest hanging fruit, so for my application it is fine (although I wanted to tuck it up higher).

 

It’s hard to tell by the pics but here is the final resting position. Now we gotta get a cross member and mount made to support the rear case.

initially I was going to run it without support, but after second thought it’s almost required as there will be a lot of flex and movement on the trails.

Maybe I’m not understanding. I don’t see an anything supporting the rear case?

Crawlbox is still peeing out of the shifter. I have the nice Marlin oil slinger housing, case is property vented now. Anybody have any other ideas? Does nobody make a sealed shifter? WTF haha.

 

I think it's time to accept the fact that the shit box will leak? Nothing personal, I call mine a shit box too

 

I’m not ready to accept it just yet, it’s only got like 200 miles on it. So that’s what they do, they all just leak? That’s stupid, a sealed shifter should solve the issue. Or a baffle inside the box idk.

 

Any idea how much you dumped in? From what I've seen in this thread, I think its pretty typical for these cases to puke out anything over 1.5 quarts slinger or no slinger. Thats consistent with my experience with my marlin case that would spit out anything over 1.5qts and then settled down. The first trip was always a mess when I'd top it off, but you shouldn't loose it all out the top. I didn't want accept fate either, but like @02hilux said, the shitbox will leak.

I remember telling @HomerTaco that mine wouldn't leak and I was gonna seal it up so good. Ah...how naive I was.

My NWF box doesn't leak at the moment. But the front output seal on the fj case is weeping. Can't win.

 

I used a little over 2 quarts which was to the top of the full plug. Maybe 2.3 quarts

 

Like @Littles pointed out, they don't like to be full. An inch or so below the fill line seemed like the sweet spot for me. As far as a leak-free crawlbox goes. My TG never leaked after I found the sweet spot for the gear oil. lol

I finally took mine out and put the right gear in I forgot to swap the doner gear in last yr. first go around. NWF updated there instructions on this to only fill to the lower side hole of the 2. they look the same to me but one is a tad lower on the truck. Mine also leaked out the breather hole the first install as I over filled it, this time around no leaks yet. It is nice now it works properly I also swapped out both needle bearings as they now recommend it in the updated instructions, it runs so much smother and quite now as well. Just did a little test run at PC the local OHV park. Mode is officially working under heavy load.

 

Just over a year and around 40k miles on my Tg crawlbox in my 3rd gen, still runs pretty quiet. Same shifter leak like stated a couple posts above, and eventually stops once its below the fill level haha. Fluid hasnt been changed since put in and was about the same dirtyness as a diff fluid change.
Just threw in a Fj manual tcase to add another shifter in. Still need to make a crawl box boot (been saying that for a year)

 

Wish my crawl box was quiet lol

 

I still have yet to do a fluid change on mine that didn't come out sparkly or milky lol

 

The term "quiet" is defined differently among each individual. I have yet to hear a quiet rf1a or crawl box. Even the first and second gen pick up and 4r with the rf1a are noisy as well.
