I did just that. I wanted the drain plate only (first) but needed the breaker because the ratchet would not move it (at least for wimpy me). Drained what I could from the canister, then removed the canister. Used the impact for the canister too.

Learned long ago that having a long-handled no-ratchet bar allows more controlled application of force and limits the breaking of things you have no spares for.

Properly installed these housings should never need a breaker bar to free them. Thats crazy, no wonder you hear stories, they leak after from cracks.

Mine (a 2023) wouldn't come free before the whole housing spun loose. So I just leave it in place and drop the housing. Evidently this is how it is done at the dealer anyway (per one of the Car Care Nut's videos).

I just got my tacoma, but on my tundra I have never removed it. I'm the original owner. I tried the first oil change, it just spun off the whole canister. That's how i have removed the canister for 220k miles on the tundra, ratchet and extension. Someone at the factory in 2007 was feeling strong ha.

I have the same problem here. Not a good idea to go wrenching on the center plug of a plastic/nylon part. Amazon just delivered my OEM metal one yesterday!

    LS1 swap with nitros.
I remove it, and have a hose attached to the adapter included with the new filter. Clean and easy. Also drain the drain pan using a fumoto valve. No mess all around.

Should not take the breaker bar to loosen, I agree. But then I was on my back, it was late, my 9 in ratchet was at an angle that does not make for best torque, did not want to break anything. I often default to breaker bar just so I can control the force with minimum effort.

I've thought about replacing it. But after 2 years of doing it without pulling the drain plug I'd probably keep doing it the same way.
