Hey fellas, I got a question, tacoma 2020 only 15k miles and sometimes the engine knocks when ascending and in between gears (auto trans) , it does it for a bit and not always, for that mileage I would say is related with fuel but I'm putting regular gas like everyone and according to the manual 87 should be good. Any thoughts thanks in advance

Could be fuel. I use 87 all the time here with E10 in my 2020 v6, never hear any knocking issues while driving. You can hear diesel like noise's when idling if you listen well.

It's something sort of new and not always only when ascending with this mileage I wouldn't think is something different I treat it like my wife Lol

It is "normal" for your driving environment. It pings on Premium as well. Tune it If interested to fix pinging.

Either the op's engine is tuned much different than mine, or its a case of less that good fuel. I can tell you when I was once out in the mid west with my 93 Toyota, the fuel sucked compared to what we have here.

For what it’s worth, I don’t remember my 2016 v6 AT ever knock and I’ve only heard my 2020 v6 MT knock in rare extreme conditions (eg killing the engine due to user error). I always run 87 octane and have no engine mods.

I believe you can attach a device to your engine and get logs of engine knock events. It’s likely more reliable than the human ear and you might gain other information about engine behavior.

Check your fluid levels and air filter and run a tank of premium shell, add a bottle of Lucas oil injector cleaner to a full tank of gas. Take baby steps first.

The auditable knock is around -6 on Knock Feedback sensor. -6 , -7 values are common when in 6th and the speed is above 60 mph. You need to plug OBDII tools to see the whole picture.

Mine pings on throttle tip-out (letting off the gas) between 2000 and 2500 rpm when the engine is fully warmed up. I encounter it after cresting a hill at 40 mph in 4th (about 2000 rpm) when easing partially off the gas. I'm using maybe half the torque that's available. It is probably the same as when the engine reduces output during the upshift of an automatic transmission to provide a smooth shift. There's no knock when actually pulling, only on tip-out afterward.

It does seem to be an issue with the factory tune. Premium fuel increases the initial load required to replicate the issue, but it does not eliminate it.

I don't hear more than extremely light, barely audible occasional pinging under any other situation.

Same thing with our 2021. I had it checked at the 10k service-nothing found. I’m about to take it in for the 20k service and have them check it again. Just wanted it on record. Did notice that running 89 octane calms it down.

No, this is under load at throttle tip-out, not at idle. Wish I had a mic to put under the hood capture it.

Run 89 octane, change air filter, and change oil (making sure it’s GF-6A)

It’s the timing trying adjust for the fuel, if you run higher octane it will totally go away, just to be safe bring it to the dealer and let them know exactly what’s going on . They will probably do nothing but at least it’s on record . No matter what people think , this motor likes higher octane they just computer adjust it to work with 87 octane .it will be quieter on higher octane

Anyone know if a tune removes this cycle?

Why would you tune out the cleaning cycle? That's doing a major dis-service to your intake valves...

That's not what I meant. I asked if a tune removes the cleaning cycle. Reason for my concern is that my truck is tuned. Thanks.
