ZT fun with Rusty - page 2

Not too much work and the entire drive unit comes out.
6 bolts, 4 hair pin clips & 2 cotter keys.

    KIMG3267.jpg

The reason it has to come out is to replace the hydro drive cooling fan.
Apparently the errant stick that got stuck in the pulley also took 8 of the 10 blades off the fan.

Notice the dirt build up in the center of the pulley - the harbinger of the fun to follow...

    KIMG3268.jpg

    Pretty simple -- right?
    Well ...

The side with the still good fan (I bought 2) popped right off the splined shaft, notice the rust.

    KIMG3272.jpg

The bad one -- well, no... :censored::censored:

First I cut the (bad anyway) fan off, then jacked around with it for a bit - it ain't movin' - so I sprayed some PB blaster on the shaft and left it for tomorrow.

The pulley faces up so it is a natural water trap, you can see the rust on the splines of the one I got off - keep in mind this machine is stored indoors too, it probably has only spent 10 nights outside (on the trailer) in 16 years. One drop of oil or a tiny bit of grease during assembly and this wouldn't be an issue.

I'll have to make some kind of puller probably, if I don't get it fixed tomorrow then Wednesday will be me and the clunker New Holland all over town -- and probably about 3 quarts of oil.

I had 2 OEM mufflers on it, they kept falling apart - sounds like a helicopter.
Then I made an adapter to use a universal 3/4" thread screw on muffler - about 5 of them...

I think the big single cylinder just hammers them apart versus a 2 cylinder of the same power.

One snooty neighbor (downtown) mentioned several times how loud it was so I built this out of mostly stuff I had around. It took a lot of the "crack" out of the sound, probably almost as loud but at a lower octave. :notsure:

Went to leave work yesterday and the damn truck wouldn't start. I put the key in, everything lights up, radio on, go to crank, dead. I'm scratching my head, coworker comes up and jumps me and it starts, barely. I check the UltraGauge and it's reading 13v so the alternator is good. Get home, shut it off, see if it will go, no dice. Get out the voltmeter, everything is checking 13 volts from the battery. Fuse box has 13v. So now I'm thinking my ignition is bad. Notice some pretty blue crystals have taken up residence on my battery terminal. I figure, maybe thats it, go to loosen the nut. CRACK. The whole terminal goes in half...
A parts run in the beater 03 corolla and some modification of the stupid terminal (because they made the smaller ID negative terminal with the right sized bolt/nut for the cables, while the larger positive terminal has a tiny bolt...) and we're back in business. Drove fine today without any issues.

Glad you got that figured out

I’ve got one for the masses, my auto shifter doesn’t get into the selected gears at times. Other times there’s an increased effort, but not up to intense forcing, to get it into gear. This includes putting it in park.

Any thoughts? I’m thinking this is right up @gearcruncher ’s alley if he’s still around.

They come in 2 varieties straight through - loud and multi-tube - quiet(er).

I have quiet versions on the International 140 (4 cylinder, water cooled) which really works well and on the ZT which ... helps.
A lot of the noise on small air cooled engines comes through the engine castings as they are so light and thin.

Start with rust removal and lubrication of the shifting mechanism, a moly chain lube product works well on the cables, pivot points and plastic bushings also.

Yeah, take apart the center console and take a look at the mechanism for any damage or dried on fluids. When I tore mine apart to run some wires I cleaned up a lot of what appeared to be dried cola of some sort from the previous owner...

then go a step further and do what Rusty said.
