A couple of years ago Illinois wanted to pass this law because low educated people weren't smart enough to work at McD's and they figured they could pump gas for a SALARY. Imagine making 35k to 50k as a first year gas pumper guy/girl. I'm surprised they aren't still pursuing it.

You could always move to New Jersey. There’s not as many wildfires there either.

I always thought it was worth a laugh when I would get fed up waiting or "forget" altogether that I was in Oregon and start pumping my own fuel only for some Hills Have Eyes looking mofo to hobble over all deranged about me doing something people in 48 other states do successfully every day.

The one time I needed fuel in OR I ended up doing it myself anyway. This was back in June and there was one attendant for 12+ pumps. Not sure if attendants saw the writing on the wall and bailed or what.

I will say, after living in NJ for 3 years it was super convenient to have someone else pump the gas. Didn’t need to exit the truck when it was cold or raining, and you never had to wait on an attendant. Granted I was north Jersey where there were plenty of people to work those jobs.

i'm not in oregon, so not super familiar.

but what do you mean set it to $100? do you have to choose the pre authorization charge? its all automatic in colorado. i put my card in and start pumping. im usually only charged for what i use. sometimes theres a $100-150 initial charge but that goes away pretty quick.

Their pumps are configured a bit different since an attendant was doing it all before, you set an amt and can use up to that amt. $100 used to be the max for a single transaction before it'd make you start a new one... probably is more now these days. That confused me the first time I beat an attendant to his own job in OR. It still only charges for what you use, just an extra unnecessary step for regular folk but a good one for the attendant in case someone sets a dollar limit so they don't over pump and run past the limit when they walk away and inevitably don't come back for 45 mins.

And it was only proposed 2 or 3 years ago. Illinois is ALWAYS looking for ways to steal money from citizens.

    https://reason.com/2020/02/12/illinois-bill-would-ban-adults-from-pumping-their-own-gas/

I'm trying to find the article where the bill sponsor talks about how gas pumpers could raise a family of four... solely by pumping gas. Hell, they'd also be unionized and probably partly subsidized by taxes.

IDK cost of living there versus MA (I'm sure MA is more) but I make about 55K between my 2 jobs and I could barely afford rent much less to eat if I lived alone.

I’m absolutely thrilled that we can finally pump our own gas! I realize that some people don’t want to or are afraid but the new law states that the station must have an attendant for those people and the price of gas must be the same price either way.

Wife and I drove through Oregon and stopped in a county that required attendants to pump and it was an interesting experience. Attendant was super chill. But then I went inside and stupidly only asked for $45 on the pump and forgot gas was almost $5 at the time compared to Texas where I had driven from lmao.

Hilarious. I always hated getting gas in Oregon. No negative experiences, just thought it was ridiculous.

Still best experience I’ve had is seeing a well-to-do woman with California plates struggling at a Washington pump because we don’t have full service. She must’ve walked around that car like 5 times. Best part, all the Washington drivers were all watching laughing, no one offered to help her. She had to wait for the attendant to show her how to pump gas.

A little cruel hearted but proves a point, that woman likely never bothered to look up from her makeup to see the lowly workers pump gas in her life.
