Ish. I toy around with biomeds, I buy a lot of shares and sell covered calls 2-6 months out for 100% strike profit, or there abouts. The smaller-ish biopharma companies are suuuper volatile. You can get stuck with lots too, right now one I've been watching is $MESO. It was treading water around 3-5$ for the past 18 months or so, then divebombed recently. Fortunately I didn't have a lot at, say, 4$ and selling CC's for 6-8$ strike, but I was about to

But just as easily as it went down from 5 to 1, these types of companies can go from 5 to 20. $MESO $BCLI are two I've paid more attention to, but there are a ton of others out there. Bigger bio/pharma (Pfizer, for example) is way more stable since it's such a large, and diverse, company. The smaller ones are prone to massive swings (in either direction).

They'd be on a class action either way. Either they leave the power on based on their risk assessment procedures, or they cut the power, based on their risk assessment procedures, and people scream and yell and complain and sue them because their precious electricity was cut for 6 hours.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

 

Even if that were true, the market cap getting cut in half in a day seems like a bit much, no?

If they're culpable for the damages, there's no way they're going to survive as a company. 100% would file for BK, and reorg as a new company. Stock would be worthless. Same idea as GM in the 08 crap show.

It's similar to a pothole in the road. If the pothole suddenly appears, it's not the state's/town's issue if you run into it, they can't magically repair a pothole in seconds. BUT if it's there, reported, and they don't address it in a timely manner, THEN they're on the hook. The power company was given warning (maybe) within their risk tolerance guidelines (I dunno what actually happened). They decided yay/nay on things, and THAT'S where there could be shouldering of responsibility. If a random, unexpected microburst came through and caused the damages, they wouldn't be responsible. This was expected, predicted winds, they were informed and knew about, and did not shut down the power lines.

I don't hold a knife in this fight, just trying to show how I see it.

 

Just happened to my brother on 495...pothole took out 2 tires...5 cars at the side of the road...State Police said "Known issue..."
His insurance paid out new tires and rims and alignment...zero deductible...apparently it was a reported pothole and the state was lax and the insurance get reimbursed from the sate...
SO we ALL paid for the incompetence through taxes...

 

Yea that makes sense. I just think the whole situation is being blown out of proportion a lil. Like no way anyone hurt by this was able to put together a decent class action suit in a couple days if it's as bad as it supposedly is and everything around is destroyed

Sue > Insurance > Huge payout to the lawyers, residents/class action get like 30$ a head > BK, so actually they get no money (maybe a couple cents) > New company, no liabilities from the old one > Burn down the city again in 20 years.
