MPG's

So I have a 2009 4.0 liter with 285/75's, ARB bumper, and a CVT roof top tent. My question is with the larger tires and added weight, would that cause the truck to drop to an average of 11 MPG's? I'm not worried about paying for gas more often or less miles per tank, but more if something may be wrong engine wise. I'm confident its all the added weight and tires, but just thought I'd check here for other ideas, if any.

You might want to research MPG in the 2nd gen forum where this post would get more traction.

And there are lots of variables you've not mentioned.

Maintenance, terrain, city vs hwy, weather, lead foot, etc

 

Regular maintenance when needed, unfortunately not much off reading at all, 50/50 city and hwy, west Texas weather, not a lead foot.

 

Instead of just saying 11mpg, I would look more at mpg for a given speed. On my stock 2018 TRD pro, here are some rough estimates

45mph --> 28mpg
75mph --> 16mpg

Adding a camper and a roof top tent, there is barely any difference on flat ground.

 

Heavy tires will cause a drop in fuel economy, AT tires are bad about that. Add in a heavy bumper and other items installed in the bed area and fuel economy can take a pretty good hit.

 

You could try getting a diagnostics reader that has the ability to provide live metrics and check your short and long fuel trim numbers while driving. Maybe check your air filter and give your O2 sensors a cleaning as well. Give it a quick once over for potential vacuum leaks. Just a few ideas. Good luck out there.

To recover some MPGs:

• Run some fuel system cleaner in a few tanks. Seafoam, Amsoil PI, Chevron Techron, take your pick.
  
• Ensure your tire pressure is 35 psi or higher
• Eliminate unnecessary weight and drag from the vehicle
• Ensure your alignment is correct
• Clean the engine using CR 505 or HPL Engine Clean
• Use extremely high quality oil like HPL or Amsoil. These keep deposits down.
  
• Ensure your transmission and differential fluids are changed
• Replace your PCV valve
• Replace your air filter
• Replace spark plugs
• Ensure your brakes are in good condition and not dragging
• Clean your MAF sensor
• Pull codes and make sure O2 sensors are working properly

 

With my2000 3.4 5 speed my normal mileage is any where between 10 and 12 mpg.

i never check running empty it might be better but I go with round trip average mileage.

 

I’ve got a manual 2019 Offroad with 2” lift and a lot of weight and drag from the shell and tank. I’m getting 15mpg highway unless the conditions are absolutely perfect then a little more.
